Unofficial Iso Collab 4

on: October 11, 2006, 01:12:17 am
Hi there. I really like the Iso Collab 3 that has been worked on here. It rocks! I really wanted to join in, but since it's almost done I wanted to start another one now.

The template below was thrown together by me. Credit to RobAlan - the isometric blocks were pretty much copied and pasted from RobAlan's original template into a new arrangement. The rules below are also taken directly from RobAlan's thread:

Quote
For those of you who don't know the rules, they are as follows:
1. Each person may make one tile, or set of connected, similarly-colored tiles at a time.  For example, you could reserve a single tile, like 75, or you could reserve a block of tiles like {79-88-89} or {21-30-36-44-43} or "That yellow chunk with 35 in it".  Keep in mind that blocks of tiles must be touching along a side and of the same color.  Also, if you do not want to do the entirety of a large block, but want to put tiles in that area, that's fine too.  The block rule is completely optional.
2. Ideally, new tiles should connect to pre-existing tiles, but this rule can be stretched if deemed appropriate.
3. Please announce what tiles you are planning to do.  I will attempt to keep this post updated with the newest version, and mark spaces that are currently in progress.
4. Please try to use colors from tiles that have already been made, so as to attempt to make some semblance of unity in the collaboration.
5. Don't be afraid to break the iso grid.
6. Be creative, and overall, have fun!

I hope this post isn't in the wrong forum or that making this kind of collaboration isn't against the rules. I'm not sure where to begin, so... anyone want to start?

err.. ok yeah where do I start?

This is the wrong section for a challenge, needs to be in 'Challenges and Activities' section.

It's kinda odd picking the exact same idea, as I don't think anyone would be as up to it as they were with the first. Thinking up something much more original would maybe get people willing to join in.

They've just finished the other grid (well almost), and I think it's too soon for a whole new one. It's like commin to the end of an epic story, and havin to re-wind it to the begginin cus one person wasn't watchin.

Proceed with this by all means but I personally would just think 'ahh well' and wait for something else to come along.. Enter another challenge, or if ya just like Iso, fill a smaller one in yourself...  :)

Goodluck with this anyway.
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

You should probably move this to the 'challenges and activities' forum.

Btw I'll take tiles 10-23-33 :)

i think its a bit too soon for this to have the same momentum as the one we've almost finished, and guys you cant simply make a topic in the challenges section, a mod has to move it there :P

This is the wrong section for a challenge, needs to be in 'Challenges and Activities' section.

I think only staff members can start topics in that forum because the 'New Topic' button didn't show up, but I saw a post about grid based collabs in this forum so I thought it would fit. My apologies.

As for starting my own miniature isometric project, I had been working on some small rooms like the one currently in my avatar, but I kind of wanted to start something bigger. I didn't see it so much as rewinding to the beginning of an epic story - I saw it as the much anticipated sequel. I guess I was wrong. Sorry :( I tend to do a lot of stupid things like this without thinking.

Cave: If you still want to do those tiles, I'll continue the project. Otherwise maybe Terley and TakaM are right and I should shelf it for a few months.

This is a good idea, but I'd recommend waiting a bit.  There was a lot of enthusiasm for the other one right as it started, but it has waned.  I'm not sure Pixelation is ready for another Iso Collab yet.  Also, you should make sure you're ready to keep an Iso Collab organized.  The one that is just finishing nearly drove me crazy a couple of times.  That and you might want to wait a week or two to start it anyway because of other things going on behind the scenes...

Also also, holy crap at some of the chunks you managed to create.  {41-35-27-19-28-37-29-20-8-5-9-22-32} caught my eye especially, though {55-56-61-70-85-89-93-95-96-88-87-84} is a close second.

Im not sure what's considered advertising here but, on another forum I started something similar (smaller). Some parts aren't as good as others but we're doin well  :)

It's over at forum.tip.it in the Gallery section if you just can't wait.. It's over half way complete, but some parts seriously need fixing, plus there's definately a palette clash (it'd get too confusing as most people there are only beginners.)

I think 1, 2, and 3 should be orange, unless you meant to make as big a chunk as it turned out to be.

When this kicks off, I'd like to reserve 12 - 24.

I guess if you guys are interested in reserving pieces now, you can go ahead and start now. Just make sure you check to see if someone else has reserved a set of squares before you go ahead and start.

Xion: You don't have to take the entire chunk of similar color sections. I just did a checkerboard pattern so 1,2, and 3 are supposed to be yellow.

I think the template should be different - its too similar to the old one.  A tall skinnier version would be better just for something different.

Yes.

Godslayer and Skull: Your one word replies are rather useless and unnecessary because that opinion had already been stated. In addition to wasting space in the thread, you have also insulted my dignity by making it seem like I was too stupid to read that original comment the first time. So please refrain from making useless one word replies so that we can all get along.

Sherman Gill, Cave, Sohashu, etc... : If one of you have already started your piece or have something in mind, please let us all know so we don't end up with a forest on one end and the far reaches of space on the other...

I really think the template should change - it just looks too much like the other one.

On a more negative note - i just don't think the communities got it in it right now to do another exact copy of what we just finished.  There's got to be more than one type of collab.  I just can't see this being finished.  I have seen quite a few unfinished iso collabs - its a miracle number 3 is (forgetting the one tile remaining) finished - i think it would be better to try something new - and something definitley not isometric.

I also find it odd that an inactive member such as yourself is trying to run a collab.

sorry to rain on your parade - but i like to think i'm being realistic.

This really should have been moved to the correct section by now too.

Personally i would also prefer a bit of a wait and a much more differed template to the last. But hey, i'm sure if this got started the theme would carry it off okay... but then again. Kudos to dreamisle for giving it a go though - just stating my views on the matter.

someone had to start keeping track before it got too confusing :P

only legit groups marked.  scotteh - they need to share a side to cound as one chunk, you may either have {60}, or {63,71,72} if you like, and then do the other part if its unclaimed by that point

Thanks for the comments everyone.

@Adarias: Thanks for posting that 'claimed' version. I'm going to keep track of it better now - it just got so many groups at once that I didn't have time to update this morning.

@Feron: I understand wanting a different template. I just think that mine is varied enough to be different and that isometric doesn't have to be limited to a certain setting or style. I believe that the sheer number of interested participants is a testament to how many people may actually want to do this. And seriously, if it comes down to there being a number of tiles that no one wants to finish, I will finish it myself with the help of friends from other communities.

As for my inactivity, I used to be pretty active. I just couldn't find the forums for a long, long time. I think I can handle a collaboration. I feel especially qualified because I have hosted complicated arts and crafts swaps online where people actually had to send physical materials to one another. Compared to that, this is rather simple.

While I'm posting, I should also say that once 12 is finished, I'm claiming #11.

dreamisle: Why must tiles be reserved before being posted?  Nobody had the tiles yet, so what's the difference between posting some done tiles and reserving the tiles then posting them an hour or two later?  As far as I was concerned in the last collab, the main purpose of reserving tiles was to hold your place while you spent time making tiles.  If nothing was in a place, I had no problem with people posting tiles to fill it.  I'm not saying you have to run your collab just like I ran mine, but I'm trying to clarify the rules before this picks up too much momentum.

That's true. I'd just hate for someone to come along and reserve those tiles and be working on them and then we find out that someone else just finished making those tiles but never reserved them first. You know what I mean? If it was an isolated tile or two it would be no problem, but since it's connected to another tile that was already made it's not as simple as just moving them to a different place and letting both pairs in.

I don't get it dreamisle, why do we need to reserve tiles first? If they're not taken, they're not taken. If someone reserves them and then someone else who didn't reserve comes along with the same tiles, you just give em to the one who reserverd...

I don't agree with Gil or robalan in this case, not because the solutions offered are not valid, but because systems exist to ensure order.  If one cuts corners in a system, then the system falls apart.  From where i stand, cooperativeness, patience, respect, and discipline are virtues, where rude haste is definately not, so i say were a system of protocol is defined, follow the system at all times, regardless of whether it appears absolutely necessary.

I agree with Adarias, and would also like to point out that this specific system is in place to ensure that no one ends up pixeling a masterpiece only to find out 5 minutes later that someone else too the section they wanted, and now their tile won't connect with the other tiles where it should have. If someone had already reserved 7 and 18 and he'd posted those tiles there, they probably wouldn't match up anywhere else because of the lava.

Actually, 5 hasn't been reserved yet, so you can start 6 whenever you want!

Update: I'll take tile 5 after Dogmeat is done with 6 :)

Im pre-guessing from looking at the progress of the last one that the colours are going to change throughout this, so could anyone keep the original palette saved somewhere as to amend it when the obvious happens, cus the colours are great atm.  ;)

Stating your tiles before hand is the only way to go, I've known two people to finish on the same section before, and it'll only get more confusing as more people join, maybe you should jot em down on the main post dreamisle..

I got the weekend to do my bit, im gonna take my time cus I know it'd just stick out like a sore thumb if I just rushed it for the sake of finishing.

oh and I forgot to mention, goodluck everyone  :P

Thank you for your contribution LegoFreak. Your tiles are great and they can stay in the collaboration, but next time please reserve your tiles ahead of time instead of just posting them out of the blue.

will do ^_^.

I've modified the giant map and will be reposting with the white tiles later. I'm relinquishing tile 11 since it doesn't connect anymore, and I will do tile 16 before I post the new copy.

Can you please redo tile #13 and post the image at the proper size? Somehow you scaled it down and now it's blurry and we cannot use it that way. After that you may reserve more tiles.

Edit: You may also want to check and make sure that your tile doesn't conflict with whatever Sohashu has been working on for tile 15.

I don't know if I should say this but, the last few entrys look kinda rushed.. I really like the one with the flower thing on (Like the one from Mario right?) and I love that little robot but everything else is looking really rushed, like not much thought has gone into em.. The water colour kinda puts me off a bit and the lava looks like jam.

Terley: I didn't try to rush mine, but I had trouble picking a good color for the water. I know water isn't supposed to be blue like that, but when I tried going more toward the brown lava color, the water kept turning the most unflattering shades of green. Any suggestions on what I may have done wrong?

This man speaks the truth. Apart from the Mario World tiles, and the Golden Warrior and his mound, everything else seems to be trying to pass random line placement (or scribbles) as texture - ignoring any sense of volume - and it really isn't working.

I thought the same thing but felt kinda bad about saying... I think the pallete for the stone could use some reworking, either that or turn it into a cake. Hmm cake <3

You can only claim connecting tiles of the same color (ie. 65,66,81,80). If you really want 78 then you have to finish it first before claiming 80. Don't ask me why, I didn't make the rules :p

Just a quick comment: I would use a more contrasting color to denote claimed tiles; the light yellow doesn't really stand out as "These are taken, do not attempt to claim" like they probably should.  A dark blue or green (or gray) would provide contrast to indicate their claimed state.
Always remember: a preposition is not something you should end a sentence with.

Morph: Please read the rules. You cannot have that tile.
Terley: I suppose people can do that, but only if it's not a really big edit like a total redo of the tile. Also, to save loading time, maybe the edit could be cropped to only include that tile and the neighbors to it.
Pixeled_Midget: Even if you want to wait on it, you can still reserve the tile if you'd like to now. Also, try using the edit button on your post next time, ok?  :y:

Morph - As far as the rules go, you may have tile 20. However, here are a few points you may want to consider and possibly revise your tile accordingly:

- Tile 21 may already be in progress and your tile may not fit with that tile.
- Your tile doesn't match up very well with the adjacent lava tile and you should attempt to at least flow with the lines of the neighboring tile if not mimic the style as well.
- The image already has a small section of water and your tile's water section looks very awkward compared to it. Perhaps you could try using the same colors unless you are looking for more of a swampy water effect.

I really like the geyser of lava though. It's pretty good - there's just something about the rocky ground that's bugging me. If you want to adjust your tile and take some more time to work on it, go ahead. It can always be updated later. If not, that's your choice - but someone else may wish to improve upon it and it wouldn't be entirely out of the question.

im sorry but I have to complain on this.  the top tiles about the...red stuff is obvoiusly fake looking and doesnt work at all.  and then the bottom right...wtf.  what the hell is that?  how is that art?  anyway, I suggest those should be redone asap, before anymore contributions are finished.  Just an opinion.

The purpose of these challenges is to allow people to participate in them no matter what their skill level. Just because someone's not on the level of a high-level artist doesn't mean we bar them or say "Do it over, it's not good enough." Of course if you like, you can crit the tiles and leave it up to the artist as to whether or not (and how) they utilize those crits. Just like a normal art thread, but with everyone working on a single canvas.
As for the bottom right, I'm assuming it's obviously unfinished. It still has the number on it.

Dude, I do admit I rushed through my tiles a little, and was freaking out about color conservation, but don't ever say "how is that art?"
How is it not art? It's artistic expression, so what, just because you don't think it's good enough it's not art?

Ok i will improve my tile, i like to improve my stuff so i will work on it! But i don't have time right now, i will do it later. And joseph, what are you doing man? Blaming stuff from other? You can give criticism but we're all just to have fun with pixeling and if you want to show what such a good artist your are, take part to the challenge and pixel a great tile instead of blaming  :mean:

Well, if you'd read the rest of the replies in this topic then you would know that it's not completely finished. And being a complete all like you were (and said so yourself) is against the board rules. A critique gives good points about the work as well as points which need improvement and lists suggestions for improvement. All you did is make probably the most rude and nonsupporting statement in the history of Pixelation.

And why is it that you don't even seem to have the balls to add the the collaborative piece yourself? You really seem like an idiot for posting such an awful crit without giving it a shot yourself. But that part is just my opinion.

Keep it cool. Joseph, if you know what you're saying is assholeish, then why say it in the first place? You're strongly warned to not repeat this behaviour. Either post constructively, or not at all.

Im Pretty sure I have reserved 15 and 25 Sherman.  I wasn't aware that Xion gave up his.  You do yours first.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

Oh yeah, just a heads up, make sure you guys don't fall into the PNG trap like last time. If the image is saved as PNG it will effect the image's gamma in some browsers, so remember to click save picture as, rather than copy and paste. You probably knew that anyway but..  :-X

I Am Uh: Sounds good

Larwick: Everyone should still follow your advice, but at the end I will go through and adjust the palette to match the original tiles the best way possible just in case someone forgot and the colors and such got a bit funky.

Edit: I'd also like to reserve tile 72 once the adjacent tile is posted.
