Idle and Running platform character

on: June 11, 2016, 02:34:32 pm
Could I get some feedback on the animation here? I haven't gone in and perfected every pixel, but if you could feedback on the overall movement and shapes that would be great.

The run feels disappointingly meaningless to me.

Thanks!

Hi, Pixelnick. The internet is a small place, right?  :P

Maybe adding a little bit more dynamic movement to things that might move around, like his hair or hood, might help. The animation reads perfectly well, though.

Here's a really crappy version of what I mean:

Old:
New:

It's a suuuper tiny effect, but maybe that's what you're looking for? As I said, that's my super crappy version (I made his head bounce by stretching his face) but maybe it reads well enough.

A man of many talents!

Those changes are subtle but make all the difference, thanks. I'll definitely have a go at working those in. I've also got to tidy the legs as they are very out of shape, something I find difficult.

Opening a chest and holding item in his right hand.

(In hindsight, his legs need to spin around properly after climbing out of the chest)

Looks like the chest animation has more frames than it really need at the end, or at least used in a better way. The core is really nice, this movement with the legs really fits the chibi look, it's just the end that's really choppy.

Thanks, MAVW. I attempted to make the end less choppy. How does it look now?

Here is a GIF of the animation in context. I'm eagerly awaiting critical feedback but any comments would be great!

The lightning effect is quite well rendered. Is it working with a limited palette ?
I believe however that it would be easier to judge / comment / edit the art if you show the scene with minimal lightning and camera scrolling, though.

Thanks, I limit the colour on sprites but render them with full colour lighting. It gives a funky mix of old and new.

Here is the animation on it's own.
