[WIP] Head fix?

on: May 14, 2016, 02:24:30 pm
Simple try for the default characters head.

He shouldn't look like a bread or any food with eyes.

I need him to look really regular like most default mobile characters do.

Also the light, shading, hair need upgrade.

Is the chin/lack of chin intended to be like that? Could interpret it as overweight or friendly? (Rounder characters usually seem nicer opposed to sharp points)

I would recommend playing with the colors for skin and hair. I think you can find a more lively color palette which will help make it look less like a "load of bread".

You already mentioned other aspects to work on—those are no small details. Work on those and you will start getting a different perception of it.

Thanks for the answer.

Yes he is supposed to look more friendly, as the protagonist, and the one you control.
Also I made his head rounder and bigger to give that impression.

I asked some of my friends to try my game and most of them asked me back if the character was a bread, then I realized it did looked similar and did not know what aspect gave that impression.

I would test out different skin colors first. Instead of the tan (bread-like color) I would go either more brown/red or peachy, depending on desired skin tone.

Start with making a color ramp for the colors you are going to use. Probably 3 or 4 colors/shades for both the skin and hair. Tutorial here:

http://opengameart.org/content/chapter-5-color-palettes
I like this one as you can look at their chart and see about how much HSL to change on each color of the ramp. As a beginner I had no eye for color so having a rule of thumb helped a lot.

After you have your colors pick a light source and give it a try. Remember to focus on shape as well as light source as the shading gives it shape.

Plenty of tutorials out there so either read one first or just give it a try.

try to work with studying some faces before you go on into cartooning, it's a bit more work but it can be the difference between winding up with a Wild Grinderz or ending with a Motorcity.
More relevant, I'd say if you're going to go with a cartoony look it might help to give it an outline to better define his shape and help with contrast on different backgrounds.

Yes! Thank you for the advice!

But I cannot manage any better.
Can somebody help me orient, or show me a better way of shading?

Or is he decent enough already?

But I really like the idea of a bread man.
