PSYGNOSIS LOWYLER ISN'T MESSING AROUND

on: September 20, 2006, 12:13:28 am

The edited for newsbox version can be seen above us all. This is based on a similar sketch by Graham "Ironshins" Lackey, whose company I enjoy on the internet for a number of years running. The colors are the c64 palette, which again proves it's the best 16 color palette in the world, and can tackle any sort of color scheme. However no other c64-specific restrictions, this is PC pixellin' with the c64 palette, just because I can do it. This was kinda fast work to celebrate new forum, but hey, here we are, might as well do stuff!

Edit: I guess, for the uninitiated, I should stress this is a homage to memories from our childhood that will never leave us. Roger Dean design, originally, now the domain of anyone who has ever played any of their wonderful, broken, aesthetically compact games of old.

I now see the markings on the owl aren't accurate at all, so I might edit to get it 100% later.

Lovely work as always helm, but there are a few small things that bother me

The neck is disconcerting, it throws the rest of the picture off for me. And the eyes also look, well, just a little wrong.
i made a ruff edit to show what i mean

hope it helps.

The purple line by the... hairspikes(?) is distracting if you look at it for a while. Other than that, it looks great, love your coloring style.  :y:

EDIT: It was probably just my monitor. I have a LCD at home, here at the school computers it looks great.

edit for eyes and a bit more slump. Great edits, Meta.

Now, the face detail is very much like the original reference, but perhaps too busy. I'll try to contrast between the simplified design and the full-on thing a bit in my head before I make up my mind.

Helm: all of your pictures are red x's to me. I can't see a darn thing, which sucks since your stuff is always so much eyecandy.

There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

What is the blue item in the background?

Nothing, just silly design. But since he's a lawyer I could make it a briefcase.

ahh the memories...
great stuff as usual, the neck however bugs me a great deal. Owls heads tend to just slide into their bodies..... or something like that.

I was thinking that that would be cool. You'd just need to put a handle on the rectangle.

Ved: You're right, they dont really have necks. But if Helm edited on a similar path, I think that having a slightly looser collar would look better. It just looks too skin tight.

His left arm looks weird with the lines going across it.

Cool design there, Helm. I don't want to force you to change your style, but there are somethings that I think could improved. Kinda messy, small blue pixels on the sleeves, and unnecessary greys  Those purples on him looks cool, maybe lighten up a bit. The rectangle next to him would look better if you remove all those rainbow tones and use only blue for highlight. What is he anyway? Is he a alien mask wrestler in a business suit? I don't get how his face relates to pixel art. Overall, the work is good. Keep it up.

Thanks for the critique. I can't lighten up the purple because the c64 palette is what it is, I can't adjust the colors to my liking. If you don't know what the Psygnosis owl is and want to learn, I guess you cool google "Psygnosis"?

It's a beautiful creature.  I'm a little conflicted on the neck.  I appreciate your second edit Helm, though I hardly consider the original drawing worth emulating (it wasn't exactly thought out).  Vedsten's version is adorable.  Also this.  I wasn't too far off, I think, considering I was drawing it from memory.
