[WIP] Super low res rpg sprites [8x8] Help developing the style?

Just having trouble coming up with the color palette and just the overall style. I kinda know what I want and I tried my best to put it down on the screen (I'm a programmer, not an artist) so it's probably really bad. Anyway, I have this:



Even though it's not much. I've been working on this for 2 hours. Yuuup.

Not really sure what to do with the top of this little guy.

So, scrapped this guy, working on a higher resolution because I couldn't fit all the detail I wanted in some other sprites.

I initially thought that the belt buckle was his arm.  The way that his eyes are looking off to the side made me think that both his arms would be angled that way.  Then I saw his actual second arm and it sort of cleared things up, but I'm still not sure.
