Hi, I'm very new to spriting

Here is silly sprite I've made of a simple character which is also a cupcake. I'm very new to making pixel art and would appreciate some criticism.

its so flat it would look much better if u pick a strong light source and shade accordingly.
u also have really bad banding in the paper bits.

I like your cupcake, so I played a bit with it.

I mostly edited the paper part to make the creases in the paper follow the shape of the cupcake more smoothly. Your lines in the paper were very straight in a fanned out direction which doesn't do much to help convey the form.
I adjusted the shading on the paper too. I focused most of the brighter areas where I want it to pop out, and the darker areas where I want it to recede. I used this technique to help give the impression the cupcake is cylindrical.
I also played with some outlines to make the outline feel more consistent, and also made it look like it has a mouth just because I thought it might be interesting..
