A pixel art contest, open to all

on: July 22, 2015, 12:44:55 am

Hi Pixelation community!

Are you a visual artist with the freshest retro 8bit and 16bit style?  Here’s your chance to win money and showcase your work on the premier collectible digital art platform.

Now through the end of August, you can submit your own original pixel art (animated or static!) in any style on NeonMob and you're entered to win a $1000 cash prize and be invited to publish a collectible digital art series.

It's simple, select your best work and upload it to NeonMob's Submissions page (https://www.neonmob.com/submissions/), with the hashtag #PixelMob included in the description. Artists are allowed no more than one entry for the competition so choose the piece that best represents your unique talent.

Once all the entries have been received, the NeonMob community will select one winner to receive $1000. Three additional winners will be selected by the staff to win $100 in credits. All winners will be invited to create a collectible digital art series on NeonMob.

Guys, before you enter the contest, read the terms of use carefully. This does look like a professional site with a budget, but they also have a large text in legalese explaining what happens to your art if you submit. It's not too dense, so I suggest you read it.

Part of it is that they will start selling and exploiting your art. They are very upfront and clear about this and offer a share of the profits. They even let you set a few things such as base price and such. If people, however, buy the art with promotional tokens, you don't receive any money. This means that Neonmob controls the market and if they flood it with promotional tokens to drive traffic, you will see less or no profit from your art.

Lastly, don't put too much time into submissions specifically for the website. This contest is no more than a way to cheaply pull talented artists into the website (as all contests tend to be). That's okay, but it also means that you should post "cheap" submissions, stuff you already made for example, like portfolio pieces. Otherwise, you are putting time, and thus money, into their website, with no real promise of being renumerated for your work.

Again, they are being pretty upfront about all of this and they provided a legal text for you to read, I suggest you do so :)

Hi all! Just chiming in here — I'm the head of community & artist relations for NeonMob, and I'm thrilled to see this conversation, but I also wanted to clear up a few things! 1) I am actively recruiting pixel artists to feature on the NeonMob platform, because I'm a huge fan of pixel art (and thus: biased :). We came up with this contest as a way to engage pixel artists and get our existing community excited about collecting pixel art. We do not actually sell your art until you submit an entire series — submissions on the entry page itself are never offered for sale. The only thing we do is share awesome submissions on social (credited, with a link back to the individual submission). And one last thing: we will be inviting at least 10 finalists to create their own series — while the grand prize will get a cash prize ($1,000) in addition to the invitation to our creator tools dashboard so they can create a series. The invitation is in no way binding — and the series creation process is really collaborative; I give feedback and support at every point in the process and make sure the series is structured to generate as much return as possible for the artist. Please feel free to message me or email me if you have additional concerns about the contest — it's truly an innocent and well-intentioned idea with the sole aim of connecting with and highlighting the rich talent in the pixel art community.
