Perspective? 3/4 top-view tree trunk

on: August 09, 2015, 10:15:43 pm
Hey everyone,

I'm having trouble with perspective. How do I make good tree trunks in 3/4 top-view? Look:

I don't think the tree I made have a trunk like this, but zelda had big ones that actually show just roots:

Failing a lot. :/ Perspective on the trunk doesn't seem right.

Canopy looks good, maybe its left (our right) side is tilted up more than the left side is, and that asymmetry of the leaves makes it look windswept to the left. (Animated?!)

To do the trunk's perspective, which is flatter ATM, drag that middle part down and make it more circular/U shape.

as pistachio mentioned, stretch the centre roots further downwards to emphasize the elipse.

This exact thing seems to bother lots of ppl but its a real simple fix once u know that a flat base gives off a cardboard cut-out effect.

also I feel like a canopy that size deserves chunkier roots to support it.

I like it less with all the grass obscuring the trunk, but I do like the grass. Maybe have some trunk sticking out of the grass?

^ I love doing this. the tree trunk goes into the dirt then pops back out for a bit then back into the ground again.
it looks cool.
u can also make shadows and highlights on the grass that imply the root is just under the surface...

Yeah, I'm definitly working on it later, Decroded! I'm enjoying a lot doing this :D

I guess I managed to do a simpler shadow. I'm using 48x48 tiles and I intend to make some variations on the grass.

Hey there! I love the grass and the tree you have made! Good god! They look lovely, although separately... The styles are quite different from each other. The tree has more cartoony, simplistic style whereas the grass seems to follow BeetleKing's style. It's just an opinion though... Experts can guide you better.

All in all, this is sexy! Keep up and good luck bro!

I think the style difference is fine, it makes the tree pop out as something you can't walk through. It's just a question of making sure other objects follow suit (buildings and what have you).

And yeah, those trunks are delicious :)

For some reason, it bugs me that one side of the tree have flat leaves while the other have curved ones:

Absolutely beautiful!  I love the colors!

I really like the way that this modification makes it look though.  I'd definitely make all of the leaves uniformly curved!

You marvellously picked colors. I think it'd even work better if you'd use the light tree on the dark grass and vice/versa.

Guys, thank you very much for the motivation, you're awesome!

I'll improve those leaves very soon. Right now I'm having trouble with perspective again. Doesn't this new tree seems kinda platform-view? How can it fit the older one's perspective?

Thanks again!

Another distortion that might help you to see it (at least it works for me):

My best advice would be to check a 3/4 cylinder tutorial and build a model of your tree as a stack of cylinders. You can then overlay that model against your art to check you fit to the perspective you want to follow.
