Trying out different styles and such

on: February 11, 2015, 07:54:41 pm
Since I really wasn't happy with the style I pixel in the most now, I wanted to try to kind of mimic other artist's styles of some pieces,so here is my first one:

The one the most to the left is what I(with advice and an example from ppd, without him it was even less detailed) kinda mostly pixel in. The problem I have with such pixelworks is that it doesn't have a lot of charm unless done intensely well(my opinion of course)

The character the most to the right is the reference, PPD's(now) latest daily sketch image. Really liked this one, which is why I tried to get close to the Original, but didn't want to entirely copy it, so I first tried to make the body by pixelling it right next to the character, and then I tried to give it clothing and such(and to please ppd some very faint glossyness c:). Would love to have some advice or feedback on this ^^

After this I'll probably try to mimic some other pixel artists' styles that I really like

My thoughts on the viewers left.
I ripped the head from one of my older pieces.

I guess i'm an advocate of curvier women.

...Bustier as well. :[[

From my perspective, I actually really like the one you did (far left) since it is bit less cartoonish. I think your style will need to vary depending on the type of game/project you are developing? Although I agree it won't have much charm itself, but by doing this you can spend more time on the details of animation / body language to make the character interesting or gives her some charm.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Cake, you've made quite a bit of progress since last I saw - well done!

Just went for readability a bit here. It's pretty cool to begin with, so I just used bigger areas of the same colour, picked a single lighting point and just messed around with random pixels. Moved the legs and tweaked the arms a bit, but that was mostly personal preference and to give you a look at alternatives.
She ended up with more curves on my edit as well. I blame biology.

I like your stance more, Ambivorous.
What I dislike most about Cakes is the stance, I feel like the sprites are leaning to far forward, I can't not see Michael Jackson doing his lean.
I tried to remedy that in my own edit, but I think was was being to conservative with my edit.

EDIT: Moved some pixels around, managed to shift the weight more towards the center by a pixel.

Cake, don't let me hijack this thread now, at any rate. I'm having fun messing with this, so thanks!

hehe, nice to hear that :). Although you might definetly be right, I still do need/want to learn how to pixel in different styles, even though some might be more fitting for one thing that other.Currently don't have any time to develop my own games though, so this is just some practise. Might make one after I'm done with what I'm currently doing :P

Thanks, Ambivorous! nice to see you on this forum again too ^^ (or didn't you stop posting for a while? Maybe I'm just stupid  :P). Yeah, what you did looks a lot better, I've tried to shape it a bit like yours, although that one was mainly just for showing what I had before :P. Whatever though, still edited it ^^. I think you were definetly right on the readability not being that good, so I've tried to change that too, also in my newer more caartoonish gal.

oops, been wanting to post this reply yesterday but didn't have time :P. Anyway, I was going for a less curved or busty look with this one, might make another one with more curves and bigger tits, if I can just call them that without finding another word to bring it more appropriate. And yeah, I get what you mean by leaning too much to the right, tried to give her a bit of a more dynamic stance but I guess I just went too far. Tried to make her stand more balanced(especially with the edit the most to the right)

So, here's my newer version:

Tried to go for a little bit more readability, probably accidentally made the boobs a lot bigger and made her a lot curvier, so might change that again, tried to make her stand more balanced and added a sword for funs. also made the head one pixel shorter and redid the hair

Yup yup, I went away! I do that sometimes. Well a lot actually. Thanks for the informal welcome back. ^^
I like that newest edit on the left there!

For the more "cartoony" girl, I made a small edit mostly regarding her top:

Unless she's wearing a corset (or tit-fitting armour) you can be safe in assuming the top will just have a horizontal line where the boobies go. I recommend googling the internet for lots of pictures of girls wearing tops with sufficiently sized breasts in sufficient lighting to show this effect. For the art you know?

She still looks a little off balance, so maybe work with the legs a bit. Try to imagine where most of her weight would be lying and then make sure the legs are in place to support that weight easily. As a fighter she will always want to be perfectly balanced so that she can react faster to attacks.

Keep it up; loving your stuff as always.
