My Pixel Art Improvement Topic

on: September 18, 2014, 06:20:23 am
Hey guys,

I just joined the website and I hope to learn how to make pixel art. I am making this topic so I can post my pixel art and get some criticism on it to help me improve as a pixel artist.

Here is my first attempt at making a clay pot after many tries...

Not at a pc so no edits. But you pot is uninteresting. Add a bowl shape to the body and a smaller mouth. Or a wide mouth and a smaller body. Search online for clay pots and mimic one that interests you

Is this any better?

Its a bit hard for me to do the top part although I did do the smaller body with the bigger top.
Is the shading for this any good too?

My edit:

Not sure what size you are aiming for. Are you intentionally drawing in at 2x? Or are you blowing up your images for viewing purposes? (which you dont need to do with this site, simply posting at 1x/native resolution will work as we can expand and image by just clicking on it)

I'm trying to start small like 16x16 and 32x32 then move onto bigger sizes as I get better.

Here is a 16x16 pot. Posted at native resolution, simply click the image to expand it from within your browser. With sprites this small you really need to bump up the contrast to make things pop and keep them readable. I would also get rid of that outline. I'm still a newb myself so my edits aren't great, but I hope to give you an idea.

Another with only 3 colors.

When talking about pots, one particular game comes to mind..
There's tons of sources of inspiration for pots
, you should have a look, because these pots are still really boring.

Your pot looks a lot like a basket and very uniform in size, lachrymose has the right shape but isn't using the same perspective.
