Proportional Help Please

on: August 03, 2006, 09:18:25 pm
->

Someone asked me to try and draw a realistic body, and I opened MSPaint and did so as fast as I can.  He will have clothing and I will clean it up to make it more pixel art.  I want this to be one of my biggest pieces.

List of things I notice offhand:

The legs are way too thin, knees look a little bit too high. The arms are a little too thin for someone with his chest, his shoulders need to either insert further out from his body or his chest needs to be less broad. Crotch looks a little too high relative to the waist.

Overall it's looking pretty good so far.

Thanks, I've tried to make it comes as close as possible to your crits.  I made the legs a bit thicker at the top, but I wanted to give it a nice flow below his knees.  This is really my first body sketch that I've tried to get right.  Afterwards, I'm going to clean it up and, after reading splat pixel's color tutorial, color it.  I don't know how to draw the crotch area correctly, as I've never studied it, same goes for the abs.  I tried to make the chest less wide to comein proportion with his arms, which I've also very slightly grown.  Still though, his legs don't seem right.

I don't like the defined muscle lines at the tops of his pecs.  Pec muscles never do that.  Remember to keep that trapezoidal shape, like a \_._/, not a |_._|.  I don't know why you felt you had to make him more muscular.  I rather liked him the way he was.

Thanks Faktablad.  I fixed up the pecks and tried to make him less defined as before.

dunno how much this helps as it's not very good, the post is flatfooted and uncomfortable too.

Thanks Helm.  The abs really help and it seems like i got most of it right.  I'll update soon, maybe with cleaned up lines.

Okay, so how's this for the leg?  The dithering got me beat so I'm heading to bed for tonight.  I cropped out his right leg after refining it, and this is what I got:

I went back about 4 times on the knee trying to match it to helm's, and I think it came out well.

Keep the critiques coming!  ;D

Update!

This is how I'd do it. Very sketchy, probably not entirely correct, but should help a little bit...

The scan-line type shading looks ok to define shadow ( under the pecs etc..) but it doesnt look very good on the hand - where fingers are separate objects.
