Wave hello to all my friends **Updated 7/24/06*

on: July 22, 2006, 05:31:51 pm
Old Versions:
http://h1.ripway.com/tremulant/Mrdondon.PNG
http://h1.ripway.com/tremulant/Mrdondon2.PNG
http://h1.ripway.com/tremulant/Mrdondon3.PNG

Current:

Imaginary friends are people, too.

A smaller piece, but that seems to be the norm, lately. I wanted to try some of the stuff I hopefully picked up from the wonderful critique on my last post.

Suckass monitor again, which seems to give everything a warm/brown tint. I'll correct that at home.

EDIT:
1BG, though no where near as sexy, inspired by Pawige's horsie pic.
2Expanded, sky altered.

I like this. It has a lot of character. I like his facial expression! There is one thing that sort of bugs me a tiny bit, it's the tie it seems to be attached to his chest. Nice work as usual! ;)

Looks nice.

A suggestion: The character looks as though he is there, and there happens to be a background. I think maybe if you have the sky's colour affect his lighting, it would help them fit together more. Does that make sense? Like maybe a mild hue shift to the dark red for the shadows and to the lighter peach color for the highlights.

Just a thought, though. Like, I could be completely wrong, considering I'm pretty inexperienced with pixeling.

Bewtiful, glad I was able to provide some inspiration. The arms and hands don't quite match up size or shape-wise (perhaps this was intentional?), and the edges of the green hills are pretty jagged looking against the red sky.

Thanks, all. Updated with some tweaks, primarily to the left arm.

Ryumaru: Fair enough. I should try to unify or something, and go for the effect stephen mentioned, but I'm feeling lazy. It's been a bit of a bitch picking colours for this one, as the wrong choices have been messing with the smoothness, so... but anyway, something to work on :P.

Matriax: Fixed (?) the left hand, but didn't add a flower (already 16 colours, none of which seemed suited, and I didn't wanna push the palette any higher).

Dan: Moved the tie up a bit. Hard to placesince he has no neck or clothing... ;D

Stephen: Yes, definitely a good call. Read my response to Ryu, though, and you'll see my current problem. I'm probably gonna work on it.

SplatPixel: Fixed?

Pawige: Not intentional, just lazy. ;D Hopefully fixed. Hills maybe less jagged now?

Don't think the palette's got any problems as it is. I like this very very much, I think you did good work. Nice outlines-to-lightness, nice volumes (pixelling spheres properly can get kinda messy) and finally, the feeling I get from the piece is a good one, so extra double points for making me feel something in the first place, and for it being good! Rocking.

beautiful.  i think the clouds are a cop-out though, only because i want to see the same beautiful toning as the rest of the image.  look at the comment helm gave you... that is the nicest thing he has EVER said :)

Sorry if the tone no its the correct or anything in the previuos message(lief, tremulant), is a joke, i think the drawings of tremulant are greats, and i understand with the message of tremulant, that he can't make a aceptable flower with this colours, and i think tremulant is a good artist and think he can make it, and more things!!

I have to admitt something. I am a tiny bit red/green colourblind. That means that whenever I see large green and red fealds with about the same hues next to eachother, like in your picture, they glow. They bounce off everywhere and jiggle when I move my eyes. It's not that bad here at all, but none the less it's not easy separating the red/purple sky from the grass for me. It worked fine in your first post, but in the new one, I keep focusing on the background instead of the character and that's not good. Just thought I'd mention it. I guess few here would have a problem with it as it is.

(oh, and I see brown better than you all, so ha! :P )

I think the sky on Matriax' edit looks overly dramatic. It looks great, but it doesn't seem to fit with the style or mood of the rest of the picture.

I have to say though, the addition of the two little teeth and the hare lip made me giggle. I think it looks adorable on him.  :D

I think it's a composition issue. Matriax seems to push in as much as he can, to -in my opinion- a detrimental effect. And there's no cluster focus, everything is evenly spaced out, like the birds in the cloud there. Too much info for it's own good.

Yes Wayuki, the clouds are more detailed etc.. but the efect with the rest of the image is possible no than good.

This is another edit, i make another style of clouds and put the clouds of tremulant in the first post, the result:

I think is better than previous, no more spectacular but i think is more apropiate to the image.

Updated rather significantly.

Helm: I think I can retire from pixel art a happy man now. I won't, but.. wow, thanks. You know from my fan-boyish treatment of you that I take it as extremely high praise. I'll spare you the gushing, though, and ask a question: Did I break it with the new sky/expanded canvas? Hope not, but your opinion on it'd be cool. Oh, and thanks for convincing me to step outside my comfort zone, 'cause I wouldn't otherwise have tried ;D

Matriax: Haha, I think it's considered rude to out do me in my own thread. :D That first sky is brilliant, and while it doesn't really fit the piece, it inspired me to fill out the sky. The flower... I dunno, it kind of throws the balance off, I think. I want Mr.Dondon to be the center of the pic, and as such, am trying not to add in anything hat might distract from that. If others think it should stay, though, I'm open to hear it ('cause it is a cute little flower). As for the hand, I dunno what to tell you. It's the best fist I can give him... (Oh, and don't worry, I knew you were joking;))

Lief: haha the clouds did look a tad slack, didn't they. They better now? I'm a bit worried now about over-busy-ness...

Snake: Dunno what to tell you. It's an interesting point, but like you said most wouldn't have that problem, and personally, I con only go with the colours that look good to me. Maybe I'll throw a bunch of brown in my next piece to compensate ;)

Wayuki: Agreed completely about the first sky edit. I put the hare lip back in (I think I had it in the original pic), but not the teeth. They do make his face a bit more interesting though... maybe I'll stick 'em on after all.

Zach: I do as you ask. How's it look?

MrNormS: Me too :D how does my rendition hold up?

Man, i think the latest update looks the best of the lot. Although it would be very odd to have a massive stormy cloud in the distance, then little white ones a bit closer it does look pretty sweet. Perhaps the larger white cloud could do with being smaller, as my eye keeps getting directed to it.

Personally i prefer him without his lip thingey and teeth, but that's just personal taste i spose.

Oh and just to be annoying, there seems to be a small lump in the rim of his hat, on the left. :D

Yeah, Lar, if by annoying you mean helpful then... stop being so annoying! ;D

Anyhoo... fixed? The hat is, anyway. I shrunk that cloud a bit, too, and made his eyes bigger ('cause I likes 'em that way). I'm at work again, so for the next 4ish hours I have little else to do. Consequently, updates will probably be coming rather promptly for the duration. :P

Wow tremulant very good update!!  ;D

But now i think the background is a little "dark" in comparision with the rest of the work...¿maybe make a sunset? with lightes, etc...  :P.

matriax: those clouds were pretty.

Thanks for the comments lief  ;)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the sky is red, while the shadows are blue. I'm thinking if there is a red sky, the redness of the sky would tint the shadows red. At the moment, there is no blue which would be tinting the shadow blue.

Admission: I'm lost as to how to colour this with a red tint and not make it ugly. :-[ Blame a lack of experience and over-comfort with blue tints. I'd would sincerely appreciate an edit, if anyone's willing. Lame, I know, but I've been screwing with it since Stephen suggested unification way back there, and I've come up with nothing. I do kinda like it as is, but obviously I haven't seen the alternative done properly yet. ;D

Edit:
I think I like it now because the sky/ground compliment eachother quite nicely, imo. The red/orange sky over the grren/blue earth. I know it's unrealistic, though, and I could be way off, but my brain twitched and I thought I'd voice it.

Trem: Take a moment to look above me. See all that? That's where you're heading. Retire from pixel art? There's lots to do, lots to do!

I think the composition with the figure in the center isn't the best thing in the world. Study classical laws of composition a little bit (a good primer for it, as for everything else painterly remains http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) EDIT: SORRY, I ment http://www.androidblues.com/visualperception.html  and try to move the character closer to the golden mean, and also add a secondary point of interest or two to justify the extra space, maybe it's time for a few rocks and the small flower, no you've got the space for it.
