That old-potato-monster looks rad, Ymedron. Love how the teeths are square, yet look super sharp.

Cartoon characters, you're so hard to draw. I kinda hate you.
Anyone decent at toons got any advice? Do I just need to formulate certain facial features and body construction, and just . . . repeat it for everything. This is a battle . . .
It's hard to come up with symbolic/simplified faces, etc to use.
Yo Mathias.
I actually think your cartoony stuff is lookin cool.
I don't have time for a lot of text but maybe this will give some thoughts.
Remind me and we should talk stuff.

It could be fine to stop on the face at this point.
I quite like drawings that exist in 2D and 3D simultaneously.

But going further could also make it more grotesque.
Just different levels of form.

Quick notes:
Line Quality -> organization and flow
Draw fast
Overlap
2D
3D

Keep doin it.

Oh wow, Pixelart sketches =)

mini valuestudy... 8 cm height... (Space-Nazi from Iron Skies) wanted initially to sketch out the gas-masks, but got carried away because I had to make a break. Decided then to finish it up.
My scanner however seems somehow to increase the contrast significantly. Have to check that out as well.

That space Nazi is awesome! That movie really sucked though... I only enjoyed the opening scenes because those looked amazing, plus I always thought the Vril/UFO legends were interesting.

I made this a few days ago and have been using it as a desktop BG; I like making these:

It's kind of like the backing to a set of playing cards or something.

Here's a sample of it tiled:

@ Charlieton
I actually really like that square crab design. Develop it further.

@ Ymedron
Nice mutant. Imagine a big crowd of those bouncing towards you, chomping their mouths, tendrils whisping and waving around.
Did you try specular highlights? Like on his lower lip. But more. It tends to help creatures look even more disgusting if their bodies are all snotty and slimey and shiny.
Thanks for the link. That's clever.

@ PPD
Haha that was unexpected! An edit in the sketches thread. Cool. Hairy arms and legs!?
Beautiful polishing of her/his/it's toony characteristics. I think you taught me a few things. Thanks so much, man.

@ Cyan
Your scanner is applying sharpening. Look in the settings.
Well done as always. YOU MAKE ME SIIIIIIICK

Good jorbs, everyone. It's nice to see your guys' work in "real-time".
Everything starts with a sketch. Sketches are paramount. Sketch lots, but only polish the best.

Working on a new char. Can you guess which drawings were done without reference? hehhurrrr
Fetal things are cool, globby, organic things to draw.

Mental trick I'm using right now:

Grabbed some nifty small paper scrap from work (a printery) to sketch on.
It's fun to fill up lots of little sheets, rather than draw on a big one. My original thought was to use one per subject/character.
I dunno. Just a mental thing. Try it.

We were talking about tools. This is the crap I use. Nothing too shmancy.

Cyan, I don't know exactly what your scanner is doing, but it makes it looks rad.

Mathias, the "fill this paper sheet" thing is a good idea;
I usually work with very small surfaces, because when you fill the space it gives a valuable sense of achievement/progress, and you get more motivation/satisfaction out of your work. :)

Yeah, that's right! I kinda forget to mention that part of it, but that's it. Glad I'm not the only one.

Kewl serpent lady. Her human head and torso could be less human to meld more with the monster body, perhaps.

Oh.
I thought it was supposed to be a guy in a tutu.
The hand design made me think that I guess.

Elbows, terrible suck at it if it comes to imagination. Same goes for all muscles of the lower arm.
Have to o something against it.
Most of the stuff drawn after Hogarth, to get warm with a stylized approach.
