Sorry I can't do an edit, but I'd definitely make it less noticeable.

ie. don't make the hair change so much.

Didn't get as much done today, lots of schoolwork and sleeping.  Just working on some misc. animations

While I like the general idea of the hair moving, I think you're right, it's too accented.  I think I hate the hair flip in front of his face the most, I might just remove that entirely.  Thanks for the input! -- I wasn't sure if others would like it and if I was just phil fish'ing it.

Try animating the shadows on the hair as well.
It can be helpful to start there and then work on breaking the borders.

Thanks for the tips!  I'll work with the strands of hair inside the borders and work outwards, then.

As for phil fishing, Phil Fish apparently grew to hate his own work (some Fez sprites) after staring at small details for a long time, and almost completely scrapped perfectly fine assets -- in a similar sense I was about to scrap the whole animation because I kept seeing more and more wrong with it even though my friends said everything other than the hair was pretty fluid.

Ah well, scraping and redoing are different.
It can be useful to do the same animation multiple times.
Have them all open and compare them.
Uploading to a blog or such is also helpful because you can see all of them animate at the same time.
Here's some examples I did for Ryumaru a while ago.
His is at the top and everything below is variations I messed around with.
They are not exactly what you are trying to achieve but will perhaps give you some thoughts.

Late at night, did another easier animation, or at least a first shot at it

Thanks for the tips!  I think I'm going to have a second shot mostly from scratch (maybe keep some frames of the arms) at that running animation tomorrow (bit too thought-intensive for this late at night) and compare it to the original, and merge the best of both, or revise the first to add whatever I discover along the way.

Cool stuff.
Maybe try a little more expression and force.

Awesome!  ;D  Thanks for the edit, I was aiming for something cute/expressive and while I liked what I had, your edit exaggerates it a lot better.  I'll use it as an example when redoing/editing that fail-pull animation, and also with the lifting animation (and of course future animations)

Played around with the hair a lot today.  Been using Paint for drawing, Grafx2 for quick color edits/counts, and GiMP for animation.  I would use Grafx2 for animation but whenever I import a gif into it, the palette is all whack -- but GiMP works fine for now anyways.

current   <---   first test   <---  old

Might have overexaggerate the hair a bit but I was mostly just toying with possibilities (partially as just general animation practice) so I'll just tone down the movement later.

EDIT:  Had 15 minutes in class so I did an initial test with the heavy object pull animation.  Still not where I want it but it's getting there.

Left to right: old, first test, current, and the last one is just a bit of an overexaggerated version I did to test against the current one (might be a bit too animated -- so to speak)

the expression when he tries to lift it doesnt seem right to me, it looks more like a surprised look.  I think it would be something more like this:

For the hair, I personally prefer subtle animations and I don't try to match them to what the body is doing, just make it feel right. Example of an old sprite of mine:
