I don't understand what this bear is.
The title is Black bear, the references are of brown bears, and everyone's calling it a polar bear.

I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be a black, white and brown bear.

Thats exactly what I've been thinking this entire thread.

Haha. I didn't even notice the thread's title. Just going off what I see. Would a polar bear be in the same climate as evergreen trees?

The reference picture i was using is the one CELS has in the http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/31400000/Bear-Wallpaper-bears-31446758-1600-1200.jpg url not the 2 pics showing. I think he was just using those 2 brown bear pics for a jaw reference?

That picture still is of a grizzly bear, not a black bear.

Well then, grizzly bear it is. that image comes up as black and grizzly bear in google image search. but it was meant to be whatever bear it is in that specific image. guess it's time to change colors etc.
I think it does look like a bear though. which one i do not know anymore :S

maybe it should be a tiger bear ::)

You are too caught up in the details.
I would suggest ditching the 1 pixel brush and blocking things out with a 2 pixel one so you can't fiddle around with the micro and focus on the macro first.
There is no need for a super cleaned up 1 pixel outline if you'll keep changing stuff around anyway.
Don't be afraid to put heavy blacks down where you see heavy blacks.
Afterwards, you go in with the 1 pixel brush and do the polishing.

Also pay attention to where you want to put the horizon.
It plays a significant role in the composition and sets the mood for the picture, a high horizon makes things look weak, lost and insignificant while a low horizon makes them look heroic.
Does scaling an image blur it?
