well i can't see it in context but from this image i like the stronger contrast in the old ones better.
especially the fully evolved big guy looks great :y:
He could still use some work though, such as experimenting with being mroe selective with your highlights and texturing, and darkening farthest claw-hand to add depth...

one the smaller crustation thingy thats facing forward, the angle of the tusks is off, try foreshortening a bit or animating it to open and close perhaps, as it is they make it look like a warhammer space marine mask.

while i may go back and edit the old ones at some time, currently im just trying to focus on the newer ones

first version of the alpha is done

messing around with the gamma's shell, lot of surface to work with, lots of experimenting i can do

and an egg, or two
ones got an under coating of slime as well as the stringy bits

i dont like my cocoon though

I'm not sure why you are AAing your sprites, on top of that you are aaing them to a background darker then the one they are on!

You could try to relay on clusters of the same color more then single pixels because they just add noise to your image rather then really helping it.

More contrast and less noise IMO.

The colours on the old sprites are great so I don't know why you're straying from those.

I think you could benefit from rendering without texture first.
Then rather than just adding noise, try adding some more subtle variation across the gradient to create some texture, especially around the mid-tone areas.

It doesn't help that your light-source appears to be front-on in some sprites, and from top-left in others.
You can get usually away with flipping sprites and their light-source along with it, or you can shift the global light-source to be more from the top-down.
Either way, flash-photography isn't very attractive looking, nor does it do your forms any favours.

Just a relevant tidbit:
If we're talking re-doing Metroid gfx, you gotta see this. Mesmerising PS process speed vid.

I agree with Decroded that the old's are better than the new's, contrast-wise. You should really try to avoid single pixel, they make everything look fuzzy and noisy.

Here's an edit:

All I did was got rid of single pixels, and cleaned up your existing pixel clusters. At this size, you should suggest details rather than 'dithering them in' so to speak.
