Centipede sprite

on: January 23, 2013, 08:29:18 pm

So I created this centipede sprite for my game, and I would like some critique. Do you think the left legs look strange? The tile is just a place holder for my desert region, so yeah I have to redo that. Thanks.

I tried to do something :

It looks a bit rigid I know, it would be much better if I had time to finish the tail
and draw different legs positions and angles, but I think it's an improvement.
Here are the main issues I found while checking your work :

• Wrong perspective compared to the isometric ground

• Non mirrored leg shapes

• No shadow. Without a shadow you can't feel a character's height relative to the ground.

• Lighting. You did some kind of pillow shading. I just put the light up in the sky so the top of the skin is in the light, not the part facing the viewer.

• Outlines. I don't know if they were intentionnal or just part of your pillow shading but they hurt the rendering quality in my opinion, except if you go for a more childish, cartoony style.

Hope you will find some ways to improve your own after this  :)

Wow thanks a lot tim, this is why it's good to use another person's perspective. Lighting looks great, I just need to fix the legs and I think it will look great! Oh by the way, part you didn't finish was the head lol.

Glad to help !
The most important, and maybe I didn't focus enough on it, is to put your creature
into the right perspective so it fits onto the ground perfectly.

Look how it seems to fall onto the ground haha.

I'll keep that in mind. Also, do you think the creature looks bland with the colors that I used? Should the legs be different colored?

I would recommend doing what tim did and putting the creature flat on the ground because it would only make further difficulties for the game. However, if you should decide to keep the head as it is, the current sprite seems to imply the creature is twisted and turned sideways due to the antennae so I recommend shifting one over.

Head is turned.

Looking forward.

@yaomon17
The original intent was like a top down prospective, and I guess I really never noticed how bad it looked to the placeholder iso tiles set.

Oh so this is not isometric but top down ?…
Hum then forget all I said about perspectives, It doesn't apply in this case. Everything else can still apply. But you can't keep this background tile, it is so misleading even for you, you can't have a good idea of how your creature look.

Sorry, that was a bad way to word that.. I was just making a top down moc-up for my friends that are helping me make it, but yea the game will be isometric. Your work was not in vain lol
