32colour palette [V0.9.5]

on: August 02, 2012, 05:32:15 am

I have been making alot of palettes lately, might share more, been making 16 colour palettes mostly, but I noticed a distinct lack of 32 colour palettes around so here you are.

no referencing of other palettes or anything, mostly arbitrarily chosen colours ramped and then tweaked, built ontop of a 16 colour palette if I recall, worked on it on and off for a week so far I think, the ramps are placeholders so ignore, or feel free to come up with your own ramps, and ignore the 2 checker colours in the background they are NOT a part of the palette, and yeah this is the palette I've been testing on the forums.

feel free to experiment test and post results here if you like, feel free to use it for anything, giving credit and pm'ing or sharing what you do will also would be appreciated if you decide to use.

*well I'll try getting some multiple palette files here:

.gpl (Gimp, Blender, etc.) : W V C
.pal Graphics Gale: W V C

What really sold me on Arne's and DawnBringer's palette work, was their incredible mockups.  I'd like to see this in action too! :)

well you just made me spend a few hours putting this together, but it also was also giving me some practice using Tiled map editor and map making in general, pretty slap dash layout and tiles to some degree.

other junk using the palette

--------
and I am playing with the concept of having different versions for neutral, warm and cool.
so one particular cue can be chosen to have subtle mood differences and slightly different ranges.

whoa f**king awesome  :D thanks for trying it and sharing man, great colour combinations ;D
did you feel the lack or need of any colours while drawing with it?

*temperature variant test and 0.91 colours (only light purple and darkness shift on a brown for contrast in a couple tests)

and another mockup, but this is actually just a revamp to the palette, of something else I had going

@imnumberfour check the creativity thread it's in 3D and it's planned as a game, or atleast a playable tech demo, low spec top down JRPG kinda thing with pixel sprites

A sorta reddish pinkish magenta.  Turns out a lot of my work uses a similar colour and I didn't even realise.  I guess I'm just drawn to that colour for some reason.  Also I find this 32 colour palette a bit drab for my tastes though to be fair I'm not keen on Arne's or Dawnbringer's palettes either (and quite tired of seeing them used so darn often)

Could just be personal taste.   Same reason I don't like the C64 palette.

@imnumberfour
here it's in the general boards, up the top stickied.

@carnivac aww okay, well due to your feedback..

I present the Vibrant version  :D (v0.5)

I'm probably gonna ditch the Neutral version, it's boring, I think I'll maintain and pursue Warm, Cool and Vibrant versions/variants of the palette

and a dither palette for the Warm palette

Nice!  That's more my sorta thing (though there could be a bolder yellow, for use in fire and explosions and such but I'm nitpicking).   I likes me some vibrance. :D

Cool.  Ok I would also change that 73,110,97 'green' to a proper greeny green.  That one's so desaturated it looks very close to the gray that's under it on the right.  Maybe  something like 39,111,60 (very quickly chosen value) or similar.

well I was aware not everyone would dig the more naturalistic stylings of the palette, and Carnivac went and confirmed that, and I figured what the heck why not make a vibrant set, haven't noticed too many vibrant palettes around besides retro consoles palettes and colour spaces

I'm liking the vibrant one best so far  :)

Saved to my palettes folder, definitely going to have a play when I have time.
Recolouring ~16 colour works from the PJ HoF can be a good, quicker, exercise too:

I like the palette a lot but one problem I see with it is that there is quite a large difference the two brightest yellows (not counting the one that is almost white). I tried to replicate one of the forums smileys to look almost the same but found that there was no color to make it look nearly the same only quite a bit darker and quite a bit lighter. So maybe you could make a new yellow.
Edit: I used the vibrant pallet for this not sure about the other ones though.
