i cant help but see them as some strange aliens with octopuss mouth. The nose reads like a hole imo.

 XD those are noses. They have mammal ears. They are bears. What are bears?

I read the black as a mouth instead of a nose.

They could do with being lighter perhaps (the noses), as i also saw them as a weird mouth.

if you make it a dark brown triangle people wont be confused

this seems a bit too pillowshaded imo, even for the SD style, and the 2nd one just doesnt look right to me.  im not sure what its clothes are supposed to be

I knew the nose was a nose until it was pointed out that it looked like an octorok mouth. Now that's all I can see it as.
And yes, the pillow shading is a bit strong.
