[WIP] [C+C] Destroyed Buildings & Weapon Anims

on: April 16, 2012, 05:27:54 am
Hi Guys,

Been working hard on an iOS game being built with Unity. I do all my pixel graphics with photoshop. Here are a few of the current assets I'm very happy with!

Building Destruction States:

Weapon Animations:

The game involves you driving round in a bulldozer as the Big Bad Wolf, destroying the homes of the Three Little Pigs while engaging in combat with their Police Force with game play inspired by GTA.

Please offer any feedback, its always appreciated!

Oh man this is all really bad ass so I don't really have much for critique. Hmm, only thing I would try to work on is the bigger bush (in the first shot), it looks like 4 blobs stuck together, maybe you could unify it more. I'm very impressed with everything else, keep on pushin' them pixels!

:y:

Looks very pretty! Reminds me of Harvest Moon.

These purple pixels here cause an eye sore to an otherwise smooth and consistent design. In fact, why not make the shading on this bush similar to the shading on the bottom right one? Consistency is king!

Are you referring the pink, pig shaped flowers or the shading of the leaves?

All the detail work is nice in the roof, but it takes away from the 3 dimensionality to it. Detail lessens in the shadows. Theres some non pixel art stuff going on here, I don't know if you mind, but it would greatly reduce the amount of used colors if you fixed that. Also, you've made the rocks " pillowy" when they are a nice opportunity to break up form into flat planes

Hey thats some awesome feedback, really appreciate it.

I get what you mean about the lessening of detail - that works really well so I am going to re-appropriate that back into the work.

The rocks are meant to be paving stones, not rocks, so obviously flatter for that reason. I do love the rocks you've made tho and I will endeavour to use a similar style for actual protruding rocks elsewhere.

We do some under some criticism for the shadows causing too many colours. Unfortunately, the way we tile the world in the game requires a separate image for shadows that are placed over adjacent tiles in a way that we can never determine exactly what they will be over. Therefore its been easiest to just create a single transparent texture and deal with a little bit of uncleanliness

Ah ok. As long the shadows and such are intentionally done and consistent throughout it will be fine.

As for the paving stones, I would still make them flatter and with sharper edges. Currently yours are like -
This:
(
Which leads to the pillow shading you have going on. I believe this would work better:

thanks for the feedback but there are no images or links for your pavement stone suggestions

I think he meant to use the parentheses and bracket signs as suggestions. That is to say, your stones look like parentheses, but would probably look better with sharp edges, like brackets.

What he said, I didn't have the time to illustrate properly. the parenthesis is rounded on all sides where as the bracket has sharp edges that are very conducive to showing planar form which I believe will be more aesthetically pleasing than the former ( as pixel art is concerned)
