Hyperwars Remastered

on: March 01, 2012, 12:17:58 am
Reappearing:

Level 1:

So I made a game forever ago which has been in kind of an almost-finished limbo ever since.
I've added some pretty retarded rpg-esque upgrade system which brings the flow of the game to a screeching halt and keeps me from flat out releasing the current version.
But that is another story.

Most of its graphics are an overdesigned mess of patterns with no definition or depth when I was all like "loldetails".
Well, this has been on my list of "things to do some day maybe perhaps"-list for a while and also the one thing that got me into pixel art in the first place so I probably shouldn't leave it unfinished.

Current screenie:

HUD will probably be remade.
Background is 2 colors only, it's still 3 colors in the even linked version.
Not sure what to do with the tilesets anyway. Too noisy perhaps?

Anyway, lets get started with the first 5 enemy remakes:

Any ideas/wishes/propositions?

Needless to say, that is a huge improvement.  I would suggest redoing the wings of the 4th ship down, since the black not only makes the planes hard to read(I can't really tell what's going on there) but also garners a lot of visual attention, and would probably be jarring in-game.  Everything else is awesome though, sharp and clean.

Well it was supposed to be black and heavy cause this is the strongest "fly down and shoot forward" enemy in level 1 there is.

I removed the blackness so it falls more in line with the other enemies

I also made adjustments to the transporter so it makes nice and fat.
It was too tiny before.

The small enemy was a bit too pointy so I smoothened it a bit.

Some minor adjustments for this one.

I would suggest redoing the wings of the 4th ship down, since the black not only makes the planes hard to read(I can't really tell what's going on there) but also garners a lot of visual attention

Which also means such black ornment can be used to draw player's attention to a more rare but highly dangerous ship (laser-beaming, anyone ?)

Redid the tileset of the first 2 levels.

Update:
I've managed to add a highlight layer for the tileset that can't be darkened by shadows so for example water has less dense shadows than the ground.
Preview:

Also the player.
The old player ship consists of 3 parts that change for each shot, max health and speed.

Anyway I'm dropping upgrading the maximum health and speed pickups.
Having a massive sprite thanks to the wing upgrade graphics also doesn't help dodging bullets.
Instead, I'll have a turning frame for the player:

And have the player reflect the damage taken so it replaces/supplements the health bar:

Quadruple post!
You know I kinda can't believe that I am supposedly so good that no one has anything to say.
Okay maybe tiny graphics with only 3 non-negotiable colors don't leave much to crit on.

So lets do something larger, more organic:

I think the new version of aircraft look really great, my favourite being the one with the big strobing grille. Looks like it'd have some heavy firepower!

I'm assuming the cutscene with the angry alien and her cat is a WIP? Right now it looks good, but without any black in it, it lacks the depth of your ships. To get nitpicky, her arm on the left of the image looks a little rubbery. If the forearm part bent outward slightly instead of inward like it is now, it would look more convincing. Hope that helps!
