orthogonal (?) projection?

on: November 16, 2011, 08:29:16 am
Saw at this forum (on Pixel Art board) a magnificent example of a difference between the isometric projection and the hmm... orthogonal? orthographic? oblique???? projection - in other words, between a view like in Diablo and like in Zelda. It would be grateful, if somebody has shown it to me and tell me about it :3
Sorry if i lost already created thread

I doubt it would be orthogonal projection. That one is helpful in mathematics, as it literally "kills" one dimension. that'd mean you have absolutely no depth perception in your 2D image, but no distortion of the parallels either. Super Mario Bros is an example of orthogonal projection.

Zelda would be oblique (it preserves angles, not dimensions), but it is often referred to as "3/4 perspective", because we typically "shorten" the height dimensions: a tree that stands straight would look shorter on screen than the same tree lying on the ground.
The other *metric projections share the property that parallels remain parallels, but on-screen length for the same object vary depending on the direction it is pointing to. I guess artist don't like that too much because it means they can't flip sprites for left/right directions.

Orthogonal is everything without distortion from perspective (so the angles keep the same no matter where they are located and far away objects are just as big as near objects). So isometric is orthogonal just like all the other projections in that graphic (with the exception of the first).

Zelda is practically orthographic with some weirdness. (Well it's inconsistent, some parts are shown Top Down from the front, some from Top Down from the back)
Diablo like pretty much all 2D games (with prerendered 3D) graphics has a orthogonal projection.

lovely, but perspective-wise, this is pretty isometric -- something never seen in Zelda series, afaik.
