Yeah, I agree it's looking better than the original for sure, and I have no idea how I'd get it looking any better than you have here, so I'll just leave you with one more suggestion/reference:

before you start thinking of the color, you should really get his shape and anatomy right, and maybe add some more details in some empty places : )

Well, I'm not really too good at coming up with character designs, so could you give me some suggestions on where to add details and what details?

And also I think I've got the shape the way I want it, I'm not going for realistic, cause that gives me a lot less freedom when it comes to animating it (but I'm not too sure about the poofy pants).
