Starting out

on: March 19, 2011, 12:14:25 am
Hello!

I'm totally new to pixel art, but I just completely love it.

I hope I can learn lots from the community. Here's my first try:

Critiques are strongly welcome.

That's actually pretty good for your first try! Now what this picture needs is grassy texture on the grass!
Lots of potential in this, really.

McSkippy pretty much nailed it. Got the post before me.

You've got the basics of the isometric view down. You can easily push things a little bit further with some textures, that wooden (correct me if it isn't wood) looks like a striped house. Also just because you're using the isometric view doesn't mean everything has to be blocky. With a little bit of technique and practice you can have some really smooth forms.

Try making a texture for the grass, dirt and try something a little different with the wallpapered the house, maybe something that looks ... wooden? Or not at all. I'm just not a fan of the stripes.

Minecraft has ruined us. (I don't play it. Nor will I, meaning I won't ever and I have no will 2)

Good iso. Texture and whatnot would help but does it violate the style here? Looks like one of those uber-simple plasticcy looking iso styles. If you seek to learn pixel art do NOT fall into an iso rut. Start trying other stuff at the same time. Explore other avenues of pixel art.

Light source is overhead yet casting a shadow for the house?

(extra points if that's Crono as your avatar)

I guess you could say that this isn't my first try since I did that avatar like 2 years ago...And I guess it's Pixel Art...
But it's an edit from a RO sprite so I guess it doesn't count.
(And yeah it's Crono :D)

@ McSkippy & StaticSails: Thanks, I'll look into making textures. :D

Those rigid/dark shadows for clouds don't look natural.
I like it though  :3

I agree with Mathias, the look doesn't seem like it would require too much textures, if any at all. Maybe a tile or two with a simple two-tone grass-like flourish, but nothing more.

The wood paneling on the house is pretty thin, I think you could thicken the planks up and use a less darker color so it doesn't look so stripey.

Lastly I think you should lighten up the green shadows and do something with the box people to make them stand out more. They are the characters and in a game you should easily be able to tell where they are at all times, etc.

I might sound weird to you guys, but I wouldn't even mind that for a finished pixel art man. The colours just make me happy, and the style too is just nice. A good first try man, keep it up. :y:

Quick edit on what I think needed to be fixed

Also You should play the Flash Game,   "Back to the Cubeture"   It's an amazing Iso Game
