I'd suggest working on this piece without chad's right next to it. You need to make it your own. That hat... oh god that hat. I hate that hat so much. Sorry I just had to say it.

The ear needs moving back a bit. His collar bone (on our right) is too high, and I would be careful with making that area cling too much to his body shape - the material is probably very light. His nose is currently very stumped, it reminds me of a cats nose or something.

His eyebrows are above his fringe/bangs it looks like, which is not a style I personally like but obviously you're free to use it. I would probably make it more obvious though?

The side of his face shows a very low cheek... or a very high jaw? I would give him a bit of a jaw lump near his mouth there and perhaps move his cheekbone up.

That's it!  :y:

It's looking promising. :)

Basically, what Larwick said, plus a few things.

The shape of the lower lip isn't very well defined right now. Using only that bright shade to define it makes it look flat. I would also be careful with using such dark lines, like under the lip and nose. This makes them look very sharp compared to other features and draws a lot of attention to them. I think the part of the nose furthest away needs to be foreshortened more, and I also moved the right eye further to the left. I shrunk the left shoulder and tried to give him a more obvious adam's apple. I should probably have put a little more thought into the neck area, though.

Overall, I'd go with more blocky facial features. Feminine is softer, masculine is sharper. Perhaps a little too sharp in this edit compared to the style you're going for. Don't be afraid to use reference to get a better idea of where to place the facial features and the facial planes. The area around the eyes seems a little sketchy at the moment. Keep in mind that the eyes is perhaps the most important part of the face to us, so I think this is a place it would be wise to put a little extra care into.

Hope that helps. :)

actually, the entirety of the reason he looks so feminine is because he's supposed to
when i was making the first few sprites for this character, he was designed with the purpose of being mr. androgyny

the rest of the post is really helpful though, thanks!

I really like Accident's edit. It still has the exagerated eyes and simplified lips (which I like) from the original, with a better face structure.

Arachne's edit is good, but overconstructed and overpronounced highlights, I'd say.

Look at the philtrum. Rotate the face in your mind. Which direction is it upper lip oriented? Downward. That's crazy. They usually face slightly upward, or occasionally straight vertically.

The nose needs to be rotated to the right a little.

You're right to be hesitant about that blue thing - it's no good.
