See through.

Just practicing textures. Was it effective? I've never really tried to draw transparency, so any c&c would be very appreciated.

I think it's a bit glossy, unless it's meant to be like cellophane ?

Also I think it's a bit too universally see-through.  Most transparence/translucence is most apparent where the material is tight to the underlying form (i.e. bones and other protrusions) and more opaque where it's hanging off (under the breats, between the legs).  Also things are more opaque as the curve away from the viewer, while most transparent as they become flat to the picutre plane.  More opaque where light falls on it and more transparent where light is coming through.

Heh, it actually started out as polished a black leather dress; I just never removed the artifacts. 

I tried to rework the original, but it was stubbornly stagnant. I tried a different approach with a clean slate, keeping your critique in mind:

Just quickly: You've got some folds showing the dress falling inwards (on her legs) but it ends very flatly - doesn't look right.

Honestly I think you've captured the see through look pretty well in both attempts. Any oddities may just be from the fact we don't always see a girl in a see through dress- no matter how much we would like too ;]

I fiddled with it some more, and got tired of the bambi eyed outlined-ness of it.

Yum. I like both the outlined and non-outlined version. I think version 6-1 has the best rendering of the skirt area. The newer versions look like the dress is sticking to her skin rather than just being semi translucent.

No no I didn't mean the shadows, I meant the highlights. Pretty much what I was trying to say was I don't like the very straight-lined end to the dress.

Yeah, that. The folds suggest a downwards dipping curve but then it's completely straight in the end - you should make the edge of the dress dip down the same direction as the folds, is all!

I tried to get rid of the static in her dress, and played around with a couple other things as well. Thanks for the critique, people!

Dress folds seldom break horizontally anywhere near the bottom, they almost always turn down into a vertical wave by that point, unless they are being caught or stretched by say, the knees.

It has to do mostly with gravity and the way things hang.  The default is to go straight down, like so, and only very stiff fabrics will resist this.
