Oi. I'm stuck.

on: December 22, 2015, 08:00:20 pm
Here's my spell book I've created with its current palette:

I'm stuck. I cannot figure out how to shade the cover of the book for the life of me. I would like it to have a feeling of being worn, as if with a matte texture.

I would really appreciate some advice. Thank you in advance!

First off 124 colors...lol  Second, it's kind of hard to tell what it is.  It sort of just looks like a box.  Maybe rotate it a bit?
To show age and wear, don't use one color.  Use a bit of dark and light to show creases, dirt, etc.

Quick edit:

Never save pixel art in JPG format . It will add noise and makes it harder to edit.

Well I wasn't able to get the perspective so I just made something from scratch:

not sure if this looks worn out but I think it looks old

@ dipixel: That's a clever idea with the angle you've made! I really like your book! Question, however. Are you saying my book had 124 colors? I don't understand how, because I made it with the color pallet to the left. Believer there's like 15 or so colors I had currently used. Does this flow into what Pusty has said about the jpeg format creating additional noise? Which is adding more colors? I still see only the 17 colors I used.

@Pusty: Your book is wonderful! I like the fell of it and the "blockyness." That's definitely the style and direction I would like to see. I love the scripture you added to the cover, nice touch! Please explain further how the image saved as a jpeg would create such an adverse effect. What is the best formart to save my art in?

Thanks you, both, for your feedback!

I think it's what Pusty said about saving to jpg.  I didn't think of that.   Usually we use png.

If you decide to stick with your original perspective then you should round the spine of the book, this will make it look more like a book than a box.  Use .png to avoid damaging your pictures.

@ dpixel: Yeah I definitely will not be using .jpg anymore. Glad ya'll have mentioned this to me, because I've always saved everything in .jpeg hah.

@ Glak: Thank you for your advice! I'm definitely going to give it a shot with the rounded edges and see what I can produce.

Also maybe done have the same corner bits on left as the right has.
seems like those things are to protect the corners but wouldn't be ol needed on spine (could be wrong)

Looks better but I'm not sure if it is readable as a book.
