The problem with the bat is banding.  You're hugging shades against the outlines, which are emphasizing the shape of the outlines instead of the shape of the bat.

Here's my edit, anti-aliased accordingly.

That's much better, yes.

Everything looks good here!

But I'm inexperienced, so what I'm really doing is letting the people who know more about the subject take over.

that looks really great KittenMaster, thanks a lot. I don't really have time right now, but i'll look at it a little later and see how i can apply what you did. The colors are a lot better and the AA looks smooth though i am a little worried about dark backgrounds. Will have to see later..

EDIT:

what about this? it would have looked a lot better with the outer AA but only on this background, and i really want them to also work on dark ones.

Breaking the outline doesn't solve the problem, unfortunately. If you need to paste the icon on multiple backgrounds, then the only really effective solution is adding an alphachannel and putting the outer AA there.

Sure, that would be best but at the moment my engine doesn't support that and i'd really rather spend my time making other things work, so at least for now i have to stick with something like this.

Anyway is the baseball bat that bad? To me, the knife looks really horrible and nobody's commenting on that

The knife looks fine, though. You got the lighting well enough.

If you want me to nitpick, I can say that the knife's hilt seems pretty wide due to the shadowing you made on the grip. Perhaps lessen that shadow and you'll be home gold.

Much better. There could be a pixel of shadow left, but that's up to you; whatever looks best in your eyes.
