Ghost Pirates

on: November 08, 2018, 06:49:01 pm
I really like the concepts of pirates and ghost pirates. I hope to some day make a game with ghost pirates being the main villains. If anyone has any villain or enemy ideas I'd love to hear! Here's one villain so far, I call him the "Ghost Pirate Executioner"! Spooky...

The shadow(?) above the big one's belt creates a lot of banding because the line segments line up with the line segments that make up the belt outline. if it's meant to be shadow, perhaps make it a little larger? If it's meant to be anti-aliasing, then shorter segments would work. Either way, try to avoid having line segments line up like that, it creates "fat pixels" that make the art look blocky.

The hands and the foreground arm appear to be pillow-shaded. Don't shade around the outline, think about where the light would actually hit and where it wouldn't. On top of looking flat, pillow-shading tends to create banding too.

I love this. I don't know what kind of game this would be from but I want to play it.

Detail in the hands look great. The detail on the Ghost pirate's left hand is great. The chain reads really well. The vein in his right hand could use something. I'm not sure what but it stands out as being flat where the rest of his upper body has so much more depth.

His pants seem a little more flat compared to the rest of his body too, but I'm not sure how you'd fix that. Maybe more shading?

The tattoos are reading as flat black too. Might be nice to add some color to them so they aren't so heavy. Doing that might read more as a part of his body.

But I love the concept and the execution. His eye is great. The shading on his body gives a really great sense of depth.

I'll try to address those issues. I was actually thinking of making a "Zelda". The plot might be something like you're this guy (I'll have to update his appearance). After months of reading about treasure mythology and slapping sticky notes all over your treasure map, you manage to track down some ancient treasure off of an unmarked island and make your way back to your boat. As you set sail a storm appears. A sunken ship full of ghost pirates arises from beneath a whirlpool and they say "Gimme yer loot, dat be ARRS!" lol (spoilers: it's not theirs, they're just bandits). They steal everything and kick you into the sea, and eventually you wake up on the island once again although mysteriously the island is more spooky this time around. A talking seagull?... with pilot goggles tells you that he saw what happened and that the pirates are somewhere on the island. Idk lol this was from the top of my head and I just want to get back into game dev.

That first design is awesome. Should totally be in LeChuck's crew :P
It is way ahead of your latest unfortunately. Try to pull out some interesting proportion out of it, as it is it's pretty forgettable.

rough edit, just pushed the line of action and redrew some things

If you go further on this one def retouch the shading.

Keep it up.
