[C+C] Basic hairstyle

on: November 05, 2014, 11:25:27 am
I've never drawn hair before so I took a stab at a small design of it. I've edited it a few times purely because it looked a bit large (like a wig) at first, but I still think it looks a bit shabby:

original

(ignore the outfit and rude gesture lmao)

current

I can't think how to improve it, advice anyone?

It's never a good idea to speckle the hair with lots of colors like that in pixel art (especially something this small).  It really does nothing for it.  Think about shapes and volumes.
I like to start with a basic outline, pick a field color, do some shaping then highlights.
Here are some examples/ideas:

Sorry this is a really slow reply haha. Thanks for your tips, i did notice i'd used a ridiculous amount of colours but struggled to try and adjust it x.x.

Based on your advice and examples I did manage to make the previous hairstyle look a bit better, but now I'm completely stuck with how I'm going wrong on the newest style?

I was trying to base it off this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQGkRyC5Xrj6RHlItgD0FvUwVhTv6x6QpVr8S3B0Bq5LsQGRVJ- but it seems to have gone drastically wrong... it just seems a bit plain on mine in spite of how much i try to add texture?

I don't think textures are going to work on something this small.  Look at the basic shapes you're trying to render.  Such as: how much hair is on the right side vs. the left side and how it compares to to size of the visible part of the face.  Proportion is key.
Also the smaller the pixel art is, the more it benefits higher contrast.  Your tones are way to close to each other.  Looks kind of washed out and 2D.
