What programming language are you thinking of ?
Python combined with Pygame is a pretty easy language to learn for beginners (I'm a beginner, and I so-far am enjoying it). There are tons of open source projects people work on, and you can learn by viewing other people's code.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Knife Icon
« on: December 02, 2011, 06:20:52 am »
It's been a while since I've been on the forums, and even longer since I've practiced pixels.

I'm making a knife icon for a video game. Here was my first attempt.

Then I tried to eliminate the black border in order to get more realism in the look.
Added a bit of shading and AA ?   I'm not sure if I did the anti-aliasing correctly, though.

I would like some help on how to make the knife look more real and professional? for lack of a better word.
Thanks :)

**EDIT** by the way, what happened to the forum? It looks generic..

Wow guys, those both look really awesome!

@ 7th Sin: I really needed help with my gradient technique. Thanks!

@ SwapBrain:  Amazing smoke. I'm going to do my best to improve that area.

I'll be back with updates. ;)

Pixel Art / [WIP] Smokestacks
« on: October 21, 2010, 06:18:47 am »
Alright, so I've been working on a small project for a while.
I took a picture of some smokestacks a while back and now
I'm just trying my best to pixelate it.

I'm really not good at this, so after a couple of hours, here's my results...  :-[

I tried taking it a step further, but I'm afraid this only shows my true lack of skill.

I would appreciate some tips or constructive criticism. Thanks

I think it would look cool if the hands were a little bit more bony and not so sausage-like.

Keeping with the vegetable theme, here's another try, but with Asparagus.

I had a hard time shading / coloring the stalk, but found this to be acceptable.

Constructive feedback is appreciated.
In case you're wondering, here is my reference photo.

That looks amazing.
I'll study this and try to mimic the techniques used.

I appreciate the help.

Thanks both of you for your quick and constructive replies.

Progress Update:
First I fixed the back end of the carrot (you both were right. It was odd). I tried using a more yellow hue for highlights and added more shadow using purple hues. I also tried staying away from dithering too much, however, I think it looks good on the leafy green area.
Good idea, or bad?

So here's the newest version (top) compared to the very first one (bottom).

I can totally see an improvement.

Thanks, and again - Are there any techniques that I am using incorrectly here? Steps I can take to improve?
I'll start working on my next practice piece soon.

Pixel Art / [WIP] My First Attempt at Pixelation
« on: August 05, 2010, 07:52:53 am »
Hello everyone,

I just joined yesterday. I have always been fascinated and inspired by the
SNES games I would play as a child, (mainly Secret of Mana) and finally found
a nice website and community to join to practice and hopefully improve my skills.

Enough intro.

Here's my very first attempt at this beautiful style of art.

I would like some info on what I did wrong, and different ways of making this look more professional.
Thanks in advance
