'Adoptables'. Oh, adoptables. I've been seeing those things for years in the signatures of forum-goers. Mostly dragons. Now I realize many of them aren't as good as they could've been.

Just like the first time I went to DeviantArt through the eyes of an Internet neophyte and saw downright masterpieces everywhere I looked, but that was five years ago.

First one, which I presume is some sort of pink hypnotoad, do you really need so many colors, or outlines, or that much banding? Almost seems pillow shaded the way you're doing it. However, there does seem to be a light-source, but it's very inconsistent. Light seems to be coming from the top-left on the frog's back and head, but from the top on its very deformed leg and from the bottom on its elbow. On that note.. What is that thing supposed to be on its back? A tail? If it's supposed to be its other leg, at this perspective, it wouldn't be visible. Right now it looks like some strange growth. Same goes for the left eyelid. It's basically a frog, so references should be easy.

Second one looks like a Pokemon, but what's that got to do with it? Terrible, terrible banding... A lack of hue shifting on the palette, but looking over it, this goes for all of them. The right wing's perspective is really off, making it seem to be shaped differently than the left. Matter of fact the wings seem to be out of place with the body. Something about the tail bothers me but I'll just pass it off as curving to the left.

Third one also looks like a Pokemon.. I think it's Rapidash it reminds me of. It was a bit hard to recognize it as a unicorn, but I presume that's because the horn on its head is extremely close to the forum background color. I have a strong feeling you'll need to pull up reference for this--it seems you have only a vague idea of what a horse looks like. (Too realistic?)

As for your mockup, there's still heaps of unneeded banding, so the palette could probably be lowered by at least a few colors. No idea, really--I'll have to go over the palette in-depth. The perspective is also really unmatched, namely, on the grassy fields and the dirt path. The flower gives it away. Actually, that tile you call "grass" seems rather noisy, or perhaps it's just me. To fix this problem you might want to show more strands of grass sticking upwards, and make the transition from dirt to grass softer.

whoa whoa whoa whoa

Lots of things wrong here. If you were going for a realistic style your aim is really off. Looks more like a weird hybrid between realistic and some sort of poorly drawn anime/manga.

Is that hair, or a squid on her head? I'd like to see more individual strands. Also she must have a lot of hair gel or something, as it seems her pet squi--'hair' is defying gravity.

Eyes bugging out of her head or something (which I suppose is what causes the weird anime/manga hybrid look), and where's the pupil for her right eye?

Lips (and nose) seem to be on a wrong perspective. Seems like her jaw is protruding out somewhat.

Light source is about as off as the face. Some shading on outlines, giving some objects the impression they're flat.

Might wanna do yourself a favor and start studying faces, perhaps looking at your own in a mirror while you work to get a good grasp of proportion? Loomis' books could be a help here, though to be honest I'm not done with them myself. (Halfway through "Fun with a Pencil", going to start "Figure drawing" next. Not very relevant to this post though :P )

Actually I think if you darkened them it would be harder to read and rather confusing. Unless yo--RetroRob means, very very slightly.

Perspective seems a bit wonky. Floor is seen as if from a bird's-eye view, the sprites and wall are seen otherwise. I'd just decrease the vertical-to-horizontal ratio so the floor tiles are more like rectangles, not squares.

I think there's always been something about the head, as if for every frame it's just being rotated, not really changing direction much--it makes for a very stiff and unnatural feel. It'd probably be pretty tough to draw a new head for each frame but I suppose that's what you might have to do.

Sprites look nice for a start, but I think at least one part of the scene will have to be redone because the perspectives of the castle and samurai do not match up at all, period. The samurai is seen as if from the side, while the castle's seen from an almost top-down view. You'll have to fix one before going on unless you want it to be like this.

Also, what's with the size? Is the samurai a giant or is the castle a miniature replica or something?

haha wow I just realized how weird her nose connects with her upper lip

and yet there she was in front of me all the time, why didn't I notice. Gah * D * I'll blame my bad glasses

I didn't notice that either. I think there's something odd about her left cheek that's bugging me, though... Huh.

Ooh. A Diglett? Didn't think of it that way, but now that I see it, I can't unsee it. Silly references. *cymbal clash for the umpteenth time*

As for the digtrio, not sure on that one. Tell you what, I might just make it if I can find a way to get that to work. Other pokémon too, if I'm not lazy. I just don't want to get too carried away with it. :P

I accidentally* my last doodle.

I also accidentally** the arm muscles and maybe I*** the rendering process which I will probably never**** again.

*erased
**screwed up
***also screwed up

Silly references.

Aside from what everyone else said about composition and all that jazz, I note a lack of a foot--at least a right foot--and that her left arm looks a bit flat. I'll make an edit if you don't understand but I'm feeling a bit lazy at the moment.

Also, maybe you took Dwimori's advice too much. Now the hair looks unnaturally fluid somehow...

Whether or not you're going to redo it, you might want to take that into consideration.

Whoa... As far as anatomy goes, lots of things wrong here.

His right knee looks to be in a painful position, like he's squatting with his knee at an odd angle and his foot straight upright. This means his ankle would have to be at an angle that's almost counteracting with the angle of the aforementioned knee.

As for the left leg, the foot looks to be at a different angle than that of the right foot. Thus the perspective seems pretty off. The upper leg seems shorter than that of the right leg. Somehow, in fact, the entire leg seems shorter.

Torso seems pretty odd. Most of it seems to be facing us, while other parts seem to be off to the side... but still facing us.

Head is almost completely alien and the face seems to be facing us as well.

His right arm looks a bit like a noodle with a sphere on the end of it as a hand..

As for the "rough hammered metal" look, it reminds me more of chainmail. If you were really going for that sort of texture you might want to only put the dithering in some places to add more variety.

Sorry, mate, but I think you might have to redo this one. And next time, perhaps with a better grasp of what the body looks like.
