Quick question - How long did that take you to do, roughly, if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry for delay. Yeah, that one took about 45 minutes, started from scratch.
Comes down to experience so you find the tools/methods (workflow) that you need.
It's actually still rough but for an NPC sprite or something it works in context.

Up in it this year.

Like:
Dodos. Ninjas. Orange/green. RPGs. Cyberpunk. Ridley Scott. Guillermo Del Toro.

Not like:
Crap art, flat art, knockoffs.

Not a lot, just keep it cool and make something good.

Right off you need more contrast between your colors.

Check also the lighting, it's flat and sticks to the edges. Old comparison here. This also creates banding. Another comparison (Cure's the man)

You could push the pose there too.

EDIT:

It's a start, it sort of reads.

Yes, keep working on your fundamentals, but also:
Fundamentals might get you 90% of the way there, but there are a few things ofc that don't translate directly INTO pixel art. You just grind away at the medium you want to master and that's how you make your best work in it.

Digging the latest mockup. Good balance of NES and SNES-like (pretty sure it's closer to 16 bit spec).

If you can't waste the colors here you can throw in 1 or 2 different tiles for cracked/old tiles or shading on the walls. That's gonna drag it past SNES-like territory and probably way off of Zelda graphics too so it depends whether you want to take this visual complexity all the way. That vis direction might be not what you are aiming for.

Has a load of appeal, neat stuff.

The rock cliff on the top right blows away the rest of it tho.
Maybe the divide between the hexgrid-like tiles (like trees) and the more detailed background tiles is totally intentional, which I can see working. But tiles need a little work, maybe small amount of AA.

Somewhere you can take this: desert climate or castles.

Pretty broad stuff here, it's a major help if you say something specific you want to nail down.

Overall here I see a lot of outlines and not enough shadows on forms...Pose of the zombie lady(?), not very zombie like. Bottle, if you do the shadows/forms thing you can tell us it's liquid way more effectively with I.E. highlights.

Last image doesn't need to be upscaled, you can keep it at 1x.

Just keep pushing yourself, if you chose pixel art then pixel a tank, tiger, something out of that boundary.

Frankly it kicks ass, maybe this is why you're not getting replies  And working to old specs is my game. Think it was the forte of many others here too, at least way back.

But it's also hard to understand without context, like the water nymph lady being completely separate from the rest of the composition. In one context this breaks the comp, but in another it works.

Little kid looks way like Alex Kidd BTW, think you were inspired by the early 80s manga style? Almost spot on.

That first design is awesome. Should totally be in LeChuck's crew :P
It is way ahead of your latest unfortunately. Try to pull out some interesting proportion out of it, as it is it's pretty forgettable.

rough edit, just pushed the line of action and redrew some things

If you go further on this one def retouch the shading.

Keep it up.
