General Discussion / Re: Best Pixel Art

Mmh these are all delicious. I was also wondering if anyone can recommend any distinctly pixelly beauties? I have a feeling that people wouldn't be able to discriminate between this and low res ink or something.

I have a philosophy-like class, and we're currently doing a unit on art. There's a big project on the nature of art and quality and my group was thinking of doing ours on pixel art. Many people will probably have negative preconceptions, so I'm looking for something that will really wow everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey guys thanks for the feedback and sorry for being late with my reply- I wanted to pair it with something to demonstrate that I understood and learned what you said. But there is my problem. D: I seem to be getting progressively worse. I am going to do something that is probably considered tasteless or faux pas-y here (I have no clue I am a noobie), and post my entire work page.

I don't know what's wrong. You can clearly see that the girl is inferior to the guy (in terms of quality of spritework), and the newest addition, hooded bro, is completely inferior in all of his forms. I can't even get any of the sprites into the same perspective as the first, and I had intended it to be a style that I would eventually make into a game. Can anyone see something in perhaps my work process which could be the cause? Is my modest muse just a fickle bitch?

As it turns out, it was a complete misunderstanding.  :-[ So uh, yeah.

General Discussion / At what size does pixel art become meaningful?

I recently posted a sprite on another forum, and was told that by an extremely talented spriter for whom I have a great deal or respect, that "pixelart of this resolution isn't really detailed enough to quibble over". My sprite isn't even like 8 by 3 or something like that, it's 18x44, but that's not even the point. 1 pixel, isolated, I think is not detailed enough to warrant too much excitement, so therefore there must by a line. At what size are sprites meaningful?

I am feeling both sides of the "silent hero" issue. I think it works very well in the context of Zelda, because the plot doesn't really have to do so much with emotion and human interaction, as being a hero and saving the day with great feats. Dead Space, on the other hand, often tries to elicit emotion, with spoilericious dramatic events. The whole "scary game" thing fits in too, as once you isolate the player and the character with this emotional interaction to other characters, you don't have to be scared for you, you have to be scared for the character, which you can't be if you don't really care for the prat.

SKIN uses SURPRISE

MORIBUND is confused

But then once I got over that I decided I really liked it. The only thing for me is that the fancy new icons kinda clash a little bit with the smileys and the top banner.

I'm not sure whether I should go for a multicoloured outline. This seems to work fairly well with all the parts except the arms. D: I still don't know how to do hands and feet.

Edit: Updated with hand-hiding technology.

Edit2: Oops maybe I should have worked on this more myself before posting it. Better arms.

Edit3:

"So Moribund created man in his own image, in the image of Moribund he created him; male and female he created them."

I also tried a sharper outline, as I noticed the old one didn't work well when I wanted to do dark colours. Is this new outline too obnoxiously dark? Maybe a bit too saturated as well.

Edit4:

The standard is around $ 8-10 an hour. If you're getting paid by the asset, you can just figure out the average time it will take and charge based on that.

D: That's awful. Even for fairly experienced spriters?
