Hmm, i pretty much disagree completely.  The edit has all the soft-edged weaknesses of Quark's style without the pixel-perfect strengths.  The originals, which granted are not superfaulous, were at least clear.
Simplification and reduction of business is a must, but don't take it to foolish extremes.

Hey now. What's that supposed to mean?

The mockup looks way too bare. You need to add more. :P

Adarias, I took into account your advice and edit, and I think I've improved the tile accordingly. I personally feel it looks a lot better now that way.

I love everything about these except for a few details:

the lines on the ground cobbles are too strong imo, and jagged.  they actually flatten (to the picture plane, not the ground plain) and make your piece busy your piece instead of adding any positive texture or plane definition.

shadow of the gable's apex is silly, you billy.

lamps (as im sure you know) need assistance too.

yeah, i need to figure out how to make those ground tiles work....

As in a arbitrarily shaded that spot that shouldn't be shaded? silly me indeed

How can I help the lamps? I know they're lacking, but I'm not fully sure how to fix that. Any suggestions?

Been working on a new project idea of mine. This one seems to be (a little) more manageable than the previous one I posted. I'm not quitting on the other one. This is just a project I've started to try and build up a repertoire in the indie scene to get more support for my other project.

Anyways, I digress.

This has since been edited and improved a bit, but Photobucket is down, and I therefore can't prove it.

I've got some pretty keen ideas, trying to focus more on gameplay this time so that I actually have a programming goal in mind. But I am far too tired and have been staring at this screen for far too long. So that's all I'm gonna say. Crit it up. I'll explain more if people have questions and when I get some sleep.

Godamn, your stuff is always so amazing and distinct. I love every little bit of it. Some work a lot better than others, such as the bird man, the pincer beetle looking one and the ant general, but all are still very well done. I think the only one I don't like is the top left corner. It's just out and out bland as hell.

When are we going to see more U-head?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Building a better Lego brick
« on: October 31, 2007, 04:09:35 pm »
My only thought is that lego bricks tend to fit more snugly than that, so you might want to consider how they would connect. Esentially, the really good lego blocks, when put together, are flush and can make a nearly smooth wall. In your example, it doesn't look like you've got it that way right now. Otherwise, these seem to be working out.

Its modern art, so its a bag with shit in it nailed to a board.

Point I'm making is that using the term 'Modern Art' refers to all art at some point in history depending on your point in time(realistically) but it tends to applied to any art that is difficult to 'understand' because it's not a painting of a nice landscape or a bowl of fruit or a sculpture of some biblical figure... And in reality modenism began as an art movementin the late 19th and early 20th century and is still being used today (in a pejorative manner) which I personally find quite ironic.

To be fair, the whole reason it was called that was in response to the industrial revolution and sorts. Modernism and 'modern art' were kind of a bigger picture kind of movement encompassing a variety of new styles and things of that sort. Just as the renaissance was a 'rebirth' of roman and greek art, or how neoclassicism was... well you get the point I think. Someone called it modern art for a reason, not just because it was new. It was in response to something, just the same as all artistic shifts ever made. I don't think they would've called themselves modern back in the day. New, revolutionary maybe, but not modern.

Felt compelled to respond to this. Sorry for getting tangential

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] What am I missing??
« on: October 26, 2007, 03:05:17 pm »
So, what am I missing?

Confidence.

This is a perfectly fine piece, you just need to trust that you're adequate enough to keep making things. As humble as people can be, there still has to be a level of confidence. Your piece is by no means bad at all, and is not missing anything vital. It works. It's simple, effective, and generally good. But I would agree with helm that you should post some other stuff so we can get a better feel for your work. Don't be shy, we're not all bad.
