General Discussion / robalan's campaign thread
« on: November 11, 2005, 10:30:48 pm »
Hello, all.  As stated by the thread topic, this is my campaign thread.  Any questions you have for me will be swiftly answered, and if you want to know my views on anything (pixel related or not (but pixel related is more relevant)), feel free to ask.

Like the other candidates, I too am a strong proponent of community activities, challenges, and other collaborative events.  Noting the recent inactivity in the Challenges & Activities forum, I think such action is very necessary.  I first got involved in Pixelation through such threads, and personally know their benefits.  Furthermore, I believe that good critique is an essential part of being a member.  There is nothing more disappointing than posting some art that has had many hours of labor poured into it, knowing there are still things to fix, and getting nothing but vapid, meaningless comments, or worse, no comments at all.  I will try to set a good example as a critiquer, helping my fellow Pixelopolians to improve their artwork.  I have been a member of Pixelation for a long time, and have always done all I could to help the community.  This behavior will not change if I am granted the privilege of serving the community.  So vote robalan in the elections, and fear my lack of a slogan :-P

I thought you couldn't support someone if you were running...  Or am I mistaken about that?  If one can support another canditate, thanks for the support and I'll make a campaign thread.  Otherwise, just thanks for the support ;-)

Nobody supports me   :'(  What, do I smell funny or something?  Have I posted so little in my time on pixel boards that nobody remembers me?  I really want to help this forum; I have seen how good it can be and would love the opportunity to help improve it even more.  Please, at least give me the chance to run :-P

I intend to run as well.  I know I haven't posted much, but I am here all the time, and would love to help out the community.  Seeing as I'm only going to be taking 14 credit hours of classes next semester due to one of the classes I wanted filling up before I could register, I should have plenty of time to devote to serving the wonderful people of Pixelopolis.

I am as well.  College life isn't quite as busy as I had anticipated, and I tend to lurk around these forums a lot.  Maybe having a position of power would bring me out of the woodwork.

Pixel Art / Re: a beginner's graphics

Okay.  First note: never save pixel art as .jpg.  It adds random pixels and generally messes up the artwork.  I would reccommend .png as a format to save in.
Secondly, on to the shed.  Below is a quick sketch to demonstrate how to draw perspective-correct roofs in isometric art.

-As you can see, I started with your shed.
-First of all, I removed the colors and the .jpg artifacts from the white space.
-Then I reduced the lines to a box.
-In the next step, I drew lines connecting the corners of the face of the box above which the gable of the roof was to be placed.  These lines are not quite necessary in standard 2:1 iso, but they are helpful if you are drawing in different perspectives.  I extended a line up from the center of the "x", which corresponded to the center of the gable and thus the peak of the roof.  I drew lines from the end of the fuscia line to define the roofline.
-In the next drawing, I removed the fuscia guidelines and drew a similar gable on the other end and a ridgeline to connect the two.
-In the sixth drawing, I cleaned up the extra lines.
-I added some colors in the final drawing.
I hope this is helpful, and if you have any questions about what I did, feel free to ask.

I think half of my dorm is addicted to that game.  One can hardly walk down a hall without hearing somebody playing Gunz.  I play too, but I'll admit that I'm not very good XD

I come bearing a random funny picture.  Just so you all know, my aunt actually took this picture; it is not doctored in any way.  So without further ado, here it is:

Some of you may not find it funny, some of you may.  Either way, I'll still think it's funny.

Okay, first of all, it is possible to have many very different subjects in the same style.  Case in point:

There's a rock, a person, a robot, an alien, and a store all in the same style.  I'm not saying that yours aren't in similar styles, but there are differences.  For example, the sword-wielding protagonist-looking character sticks out like a blue thumb.

And if you want examples of metal doors, google is your friend.  In fact google is always your friend.  I found these pictures in the first two rows of a google image search for "metal door" XD

In case this was not the kind of help you were looking for, I will attempt to give some crits on your work.
-You probably can see this, but the hero guy needs more detail.  He is incredibly flat, while the robot and alien have very nice shading rounding out their forms.
-Why do you have so many colors on the walls?  The lights' cones could probably be drawn with less than half that many colors.  I didn't even see half of them until I zoomed way in.
-I like that you put some variety into the walls by knocking one of the lights out and breaking the wire.  However, you could get even more variety quite easily: try making one or two of the grates messed up somewhat, or even put stains on the wall or something.  You could also get some variety by putting cracks or something into the ceiling and floor.
-Speaking of the ceiling and floor, what's up with them?  The rest of the world appears to be made of metal, very high tech and stuff, yet the floor and ceiling seem to be made of adobe brick or something.  I don't have any suggestions off the top of my head for what to do there, but the adobe looks very out of place.

Now for the door.
-First of all, the light is not aimed at the door, it is coming from overhead.  Thus, the highlight should be more horizontal.  The middle reference pic I linked to shows a good example of horizontal highlighting.  Try doing something like that if you can.
-I do like the line dividing the halves of the door; you did a good job defining that.  However, since the light is in the middle of the door, you probably want to reverse the lighting on the bottom vertical part.

To sum it all up: overall, it looks nice, especially the sprites.  The background could stand to lose a couple of colors and perhaps have a bit more variety, but it is quite well done.  The door has nice lineart, but the highlight needs changing.  I look forward to updates!
