I think you got the style pretty good, but in terms of design, the monster would look better if he had a much bigger belly and like, a rabbit's hing legs. Or at least much thicker legs.

Right now, it looks like he can't support his own weight.

The chibi sprite looks alot better. Good job.

Edit:

I increased the contrast between colors significantly, and made several minor edits all around. It's hard to explain what I did exactly, but I think pictures speak louder than words.

The calves are kind of short, and the floor isn't very noticeable, but it looks like you're off to a good start here.

Try to make the mountains simpler. Remove the dither and use the dark purple to imply the shadows on the mountain.

It's just the theme this week, I guess. Anyway.

And here is the ref.

This is my first real attempt at a portrait, and I think I'm doing it wrong. Also, I disturbingly look like some sort of gangster or something...anyway, help please?

Looks like the character is an edit from these characters...

I don't think what you're doing with the wallpaper background is working. Mainly because you just tiled something, and that creates noise. Darkening the backdrop helped with this, but now it's barely visible. Would it really be that different from just a solid black?

What I recommend is to design a backdrop with some sort of function, maybe some variation in the tiles, things like candles, statues, and you know, stuff like that.

I feel that the hair is too insane. It's very noisy, and the shapes of the hair are hard to read. I get that you're trying to make him seem crazy, but the way the hair is right now is not working. Especially since the face is fairly smooth compared to the hair, it doesn't match overall as a composition. Also, I think the contrast in the colors of the hair is too high.

But I do like where this is going.

I love the little characters, but I don't think the perspective on the walls is right, especially the tops and sides of the walls. I'm not an expert on perspective, so I'm not sure how how to fix it, but I think you're trying to trying to achieve a perspective like from Zelda, right?
