Hello,

new version with reduced palette (now 14 instead of 18 colours) and many changes:

I am still not satisfied with it looks too flat, but i am a bit stuck atm.

Hello,

It looks very flat as you have it now.  Also, dragonflies have four wings, not two.

I suggest looking at some references of dragonflies and study their anatomy.  I understand it's not supposed to be lifelike, but I believe it will make your piece much better looking.
Ok, i'll give it a try to make it more recognizeable as a dragonfly.

I'm not very good at shading (or colors for that matter) but there's something wrong in your shading; I just can't put my finger on it.

Yes it seems there is something missing for a cooler look and maybe it looks odd that the front got mor light than the back.

EDIT:  Another thing, he doesn't look like he's in much of a "combat state" or anything, or like he's even flying.  Give him some kind of dynamic pose.

Right, its definitly lacking aggressiveness or as you proposed dynamic.

Thanks for your help, new version hopefully coming soon.

Hello,

here is a sprite i did today it depicts a combat dragonfly, a possible endboss. Yet i am not satisfied with parts in the back. Btw. there is no AA to the background as its supposed to work on any gfx.
If you have any ideas for improving the piece, just fire at will.  ;D

Hello,

first thing that struck me was that the torso of the women has much more details in it than her legs/feet and the background. This makes it look like two different styles in one picture for me.
The arms look too thin for me either.

Maybe a cliche moon would help to bring some content in the back ? A shadow would link the woman to the ground.

Pixel Art / Re: Palette improvements

Hello,

Rosse: Thanks for your reply. I really forgot to mention what the pic is about, sorry.

The topic was to depict someone listening to music in 150x50 and 8 colours. So i chose to draw someone who was watching an opera through his/her lorgnette.

I had to find colours that match metall and skin so i chose the current one.

Your "gold edition" looks quite nice, so does the "mad" one for the scientist topic.

Pixel Art / Palette improvements
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:43:59 am »
Hello,

after having some good experience with other pixelguys i finally decided to give up my single fighter mentality and discuss my and others picture more.
Thats why i joined pixelation, it seems there are excellent artists here who are friendly and really help improving one.

Now thats enough of a speech now, back to the pixels:

Though this piece was in a compo at Pixeljoint, a comment of slym made be think. He mentioned that the palette wasn't too well. As i thought it was, i was wondering, which other ways could have been chosen and if it would have improved or only changed things.

So could you please help with variations ? Thanks alot for any insight.
