Ahhh... memories... Sensible Soccer on amiga, Pro Evolution Soccer, Fifa, I love those games. We still play almost every time Fifa 08/09 with my friends when they come over. Not that I would be a soccer fanatic, not even close, but they're good games and fun to play in a group.

General Discussion / Re: Firefox 3 blurring pixel art question

I changed to Opera too after all this IE / FF hassle. So far I've liked it, there are few minor issues that bug me personally but they're nothing compared to image blurring with other browsers. Which crash and have bugs as well :) So it's a win-win.

Well at least where I bought the book (Akateeminen), the english version was softcover and the paper and print quality weren't nearly as good as the finnish version which was hardcover. Also since the story is so multi-layered and deep, I think it would be easier to really get into it if you read it with your native language, even if your english is fluent. It still makes a difference to read it with your native language. And since the translation is very, very good which isn't always the case, I can't but to recommend it to my fellow finnish people. Of course I don't mean that the finnish version is superior to every version that is out there but I must recommend the finnish version because comic hobbyists here in finland might overlook it without examing it just because it's translated and often translations are bad or medicore at best. But that isn't the case here (I've read now 4/5 of the book).

I haven't seen Watchmen the movie yet but I bought the book few days ago and now I'm half way through. Gotta say that despite the fact that it's at times pretty heavy reading and really confusing because it jumps back and forth in time and places, I've still managed to stay along and boy, what a comic it is! I can't wait to finish it!

FYI huZba & co, if you still don't have the Watchmen comic, buy the finnish version of the book. It's better quality print than the english version here in finland and the translation is exceptionally good. I usually buy stuff in english, because the language is much richer but in this case I think you'd really benefit from buying the finnish version.

Pixel Art / Mini-me
« on: March 09, 2009, 07:01:10 pm »
Hi,

I haven't pixelled for a looooong time, so I feel really rusty. I hope you guys could help me out here.

I try to have 2 lightsources but the result seems quite a mess and I'm lost what to do with it. The character is supposed to stand in front of a burning kiln, thus the strong key light and the blue light should be the fill / ambient light.

I must say that the original(new) cliffs of BB, with the flatness, made me focus primarily on the walkable platform itself rather than the cliffs as a whole.
While the cliffs might suffer, isn't this a good thing when you're working on a platformer?

As long as you easily separate which planes are possible to stand on and what aren't, I don't see why one should emphasize the actual platform. I think the value difference between the platform and the cliffs is really enough to avoid confusing planes. Also remember that when you play the game, your eye focuses pretty much automatically to the plane where you see the character move and you sort of stop observing the background graphics, so I see no problem with the platform as it is now.

The newest version is way better and more appealing visually in all aspects than the previous one and I think it is really polished and final quality piece. Good job and nice progress! I'd almost like to see this one featured.

Pixel Art / Re: Revamping Hammerman

I don't agree that the eyes need to forced on the character. Maybe if the portrait is going to be as big as it is now, then yeah maybe, but look at BlackThorne a.k.a. Helm :) He doesn't have eyes either! And man is that dude some serious badass!

And I second Mike, I think the hammer should be practical. The walk animation as it is now fits to something like dragging an object. But if the hero is going to swing that ginormous hammer, then he shouldn't have problem carrying it around. I think it looks just stupid that he first drags it like it weighs 1000tons and then swings it like a feather-duster. :D

I say it's their loss. They will mature in time. As long as the c&c is polite and constructive, I don't see why this forum even should try to please everyone. It will help those willing to learn, and they deserve it.

Majority of the time, they would say something along the lines of " No, I've lurked at pixelation before, I'm afraid those guys are a little too advanced for me, or may be too harsh on my work.").

I personally fail to see how this is a bad thing? Eatpoo was in its glory days a good example of a forum where people actually would benefit being part of it (well to be honest, they were at times a bit TOO rude, which I don't think is an issue here. Here people would actually help you even more, by making paintovers and such.). I think if you want to be an artist but you're not willing to learn, or willing to accept that people will have opinions about your work every time you bring them to public, then maybe it's for the best that you make your art only for your mom or store it in a drawer. I don't think it's elitist to say that if someone can't take criticism, they should stay away, I think it's just true. If this place would change into an asspat community, everyone would suffer. If you just want praise about your work, there are places for that too, but I don't see it's here.

By no means the critique should be rude or otherwise degrading, just the opposite but even as hard as it is, you should be able to recieve criticism if you want to learn. I don't think Pixelation is a show gallery either. I think this applies also to the issues that Xelados has. Since some people have traditional training, of course they will bring out those points in their criticism, and I don't see why they shouldn't? One might even gain something if they would listen to those advices, no matter how personal and "unique" style they have.

These are of course only my personal opinions about what Pixelation is and isn't so...

Is this some kind of a joke? :D

I can't be coincidence that helm said yesterday

5. Spend more time in your community discussing the merits of pixels and some learning instead of 'what music do you listen to?' and stuff like that.

and now this thread pops up. ;D
