Pixel Art / Re: Hawk animation wip
« on: May 20, 2010, 03:44:53 am »
There's to much contrast between the smooth animation of the wings and the stiffness of the rest of the body.
I don't know exactly how birds move when they fly. But I don't know... maybe moving the whole bird a bit more could help, or some minimal changes in the shadow, to give the effect of moving feathers.

PS: Forgot to mention, the flapping is great  :)

I got no critic because you didn't fix any of the errors. It still looks to photo-real, looks like a reduce polarize photo. I'm not saying it is, but it looks that way, which is no good.
Yo should simplify/smooth your pixel clusters.
As you see, it's the same critic Mathias and Ryumaru gave you.

I make this edit, maybe it'll help, or not:

You got too many useless skin colour, maybe you could reduce your palette or use some of the colours just for aa.
Before adding things to the portrait, try to finish some part.
The pose is correct, so there's no problem there.
It's very messy though, clean some lines, before a new update.

Remember to enlarge in hundreds (Ex: 200%, 300%, 400%, etc...) If not it's not gonna be faithful. When you enlarge by 500% a pixel turns into 25 (5x5)

What book would you suggest to start with? He has quite a few.
To start: Fun with a Pencil.

You should start learning how to draw on paper. As Gil always suggest: the books from Andrew Loomis are always a good place to start. You can find them here: LINK.
Then when you feel comfortable about your knowledge in anatomics and light you can swith to pixel.

Here's a small edit I make, not very good one, but would help me explain myself:

* You got to much unnecesary aa.
* Palette is a bit desaturated.
* Try recycling colors.
* Try removing outlines.

Of course you can go for a cartoony style and leave the outlines and don't work with too much shadow. But it depends on what you're going for.
Hope it helps :)

General Discussion / Game Development Questions
« on: April 18, 2010, 01:36:40 am »
Today I got a meeting with some friends about the game we are making, one of the most important topic was communication. Nowadays we handle our work online. All the updates are uploaded via svn, some things are talked via forum and some we do it via Google Wave (because is pretty easy to use and comfortable for showing updates quickly). We also used Trac for sometime, but for some reasons (a ticket wasn't so easy to customize as a Forum's thread or a Google's wave) we stop using it.

My questions are: what do you guys used when you work offsite? How do you talk with your superior/client? How do you handle all the communication and preview of your work?  ???

ohhh. Yeah i liked that one too but it looked weird having a thick outline while the rest of the site had no outlines.

What about removing the outline, but just keeping some kind of drop shadow?
It's the logo, it doesn't need to have the same characteristics of the rest of the web. Maybe you could use some dark brown for it, insted of a pure black.
I don't know. The logo is a very important part of the website and the one you leave isn't well defined. I think the simpler version looked better.

"I prefer the jajitsu sign in the "original new" artwork. Hope that's not too confusing." I don't understand

He meant this one was better (the top one):

I agree with him, the actual JaJitsu sign has way too much aa. It looks messy.
The rest is excelent. I mean, like some of my teachers said: "there are some things that are never finish". In other words, maybe its not perfect but it looks great  :)
