Pixel Art / 'Advance Wars'-style Mock-up
« on: September 23, 2010, 08:48:07 pm »
This may or may not be a true mock-up, since I may at some point find a programmer or use my limited programming skills to take a stab at it.

Still, I figured whatever happens, I should post these for critique, since there are a great many things wrong here. I also desperately tried to give them my own style and make them look less like I ripped them from Advance Wars itself, but it's a surprisingly difficult task.

I'm planning on changin the HUD, doesn't look too NES-ish

It's also kinda difficult to see. Besides that, though, again I say; good work. Look forward to completed product.

Getting around to character design now. The sprites from Elemental Gelade have helped greatly here.

I took a refined outline of one of the previous case study bodies and the outline of one of my own custom heads and began a test to figure out chibi anatomy.

I filled him in, failing to realize that the whole 'pectoral cross' thing doesn't work well at small scale.

I fixed this and slimmed his sides down, realizing that the old outline was based on clothing, which made him look fat xD.

And an overall test image for various things. Tweaking the styles I found and messing around with weaponry. Nothing final yet.

Pixel Art / Re: Logo
« on: September 02, 2010, 04:07:42 pm »
I'm certainly not the best guy to consult here, but here's my take on it:

The first thing I thought was 'this is a logo, so if this were mine I'd want it to 'pop' visually'. So I drastically darkened your darkest blue and used it for the unlit pieces of ice. I also made them larger (since you complained that it look flat) and gave them more than one color (icy streaks using the dark gray you used on top) to make them better fit in with the logo overall. I then slightly darkened the top of it (it popped a bit too much  :( ), unfortunately turning your palette from four to five colors, since the blue you used previously served as a nice fade from the bright white into the surface of the lettering.

Like I said... I'm not the best, but I tried, taking into account some of the things I've learned on these forums over the past year. I really hope this helps you out.

    Cheers, Olly

Hey, thanks. I appreciate the compliment.

Good luck whenever you get around to animating :y:

Been quite busy lately, sorry guys.

Just a tiny bit of progress here, I started work on one of the varieties of Ent.

As always, critique is encouraged and welcomed.

UPDATE: Fixed the eyes (they're just sockets now) and worked on defining the limbs a bit better. I know the hands are two different styles so far, but I just wanted to throw each out there before bed and make a definite decision in the morning.

So far, so good. I did the same thing you did when studying the DoDonPachi sprite style. You've got it down pretty well, it just needs a few more little details and fiddly bits.

It all is in the same perspective to me ??? I guess when I add the sprite and all it will be more clear.

Oh! My apologies, I guess I didn't look close enough. The flowers and rocks are behind the platform, where the bridge is simply part of the platform tile-wise. My mistake.

My only complaint is that either the bridge or the flowers are at a bad angle. The bottom tier of tiles seems more angled towards he player, while the top seems perfectly perpendicular to player view.

It can work either way, but you should pick one and stick to it as much as possible.

Great job so far, the colors are very vibrant and interesting. :y:

Agreed with buddy, it's those two that are causing your issues, although I can see a little bit why you thought it was the pink one.

Anywho, if I were to move on to posing, I'd say the man with blue hair and goatee has the best pose for a fighting styled game. I know it might seem kinda generic, but he exudes a lot more character than the rest of them to me.
