Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] The Kraken Awakens

The main problem is you don't account for refraction of light.
For a certain angle which is reached at a very short distance (a few meters) light (from beneath) would undergo total reflection on the surface, and no light could come from outside.
You would not see the outside parts of tentacles nor the sun / moon, but what's below would be 100% reflected.

I couldn't find a suitable ref except the turtle photo down in this page.
No time now, but I might look again tomorrow. In the meantime, try to find underwater shots with visible sun, I think you'll understand the point.

The inside lights are still probably too bright, or else some of this light should reach the grass in front of the "doors" too.
The color ranges are too separate between inside / outside, some recycling of yellows in the leaves or reds in the trunks might improve that.

The doors look like openings, but the "windows" don't, look more like eyes. Maybe that's what they are? ;)

The second nest from left looks further away: removing the darkest shade might give more depth to the whole picture.

Can't wait for more updates!

There are some composition issues, I'm not sure I see them all clearly yet.

The clouds upper limit is tangent to the tree top, which is distracting because they already have not too dissimilar textures and tones.

The bg textures (both clouds and 'rock') have lines that 'go around' the center, which tends to make the eye wander aimlessly. Pointing those features towards the center might help.

The light is too even, both bg and fg. The typical idea would be to have a well-lit tree, darker ground level and darkest underground. Other options would be nice too: inverted, lightest in the middle, etc. The bg light gradient might be opposite to the fg's.

And maybe for a tree that's as unique as this, you'd expect wilder colors.

The angle is a bit different and the light very different, but yes, there are important features in this photo which are not in your pixel.

Mostly, the cheekbone-cheek-chin line.
Also more neck.

And just redo the whole hair!

I think the composition could be more balanced.

On the left side, there's mostly verticals, and horizontals on the right.
Maybe just cutting the hedge fence would be enough.
But as Conceit says, don't add anything!

On top of the highest roof, the black line is unnecessary.

Agree with previous comments. Mostly, your version is not readable regarding the very specific shape of this camera.
It doesn't look like you actually understand it.
I think a more obvious light source would help you define the camera planes.

I agree too that Elk's edit is highly interesting.

Of course I can't judge how your face has changed since, but it also has better light and volume which should apply regardless of any change (they were there too in Helm's edit).

I'm aware these are really difficult to achieve anyway, but worth trying!

Thanks again guys for the valuable advice!

By orange and blue, I guess you mean 23?

I improved from that: saturated colors (not too much, I think the early suggestions about pastel-looking colors were good; also the blue is at the limit of printability, according to my color management photoshop settings).
Also fixed AA between color zones.

AAed the greyscale version (to a white bg; might need some fixing yet); tried more color versions (AA between color zones will have to be fixed).
I like messing with colors so much that I'll have a hard time settling for one.  :blind:

Pure pixel candy.

Titlescreen: the underside of the ship might be darker.
