WIP animation:

I vectorized a drawing of mine, shrunk it down, and reduced the colors. Very WIP.
Critique relating to pixel technique will probably be covered later, I haven't spent much time with the pixelling process yet.

The bottom portion of the image references the Parable of the Rich Fool, given by Jesus in Luke 13-21. The parable is about a man whose fields yield a bountiful harvest, and he builds larger barns in order to store his crops for the future, telling himself he can take life easy in the present. He dies that night however, and God asks, "Whose shall be the things you have accumulated for yourself?"

The top portion references the verses that immediately follow (Luke 22-34). These verses contrast with the previous paragraph, using the examples of the "lilies of the field" that "neither toil nor spin", yet are clothed by God; and the ravens who "neither sow nor reap", yet are fed by God.

The middles portion is a reference not to Luke 12, as the other two, but to the well known "Render unto Caesar" quote given within Matthew 12:13-17. The border is a reference to American currency.

The piece is part of a planned series on Christianity in America, a culture that embraces the image of Christ, while operating in accordance with the ideals of a western society that often stands at odds with the teachings of their hero. This particular piece is about the the anti-materialist teachings of Jesus, and the intense materialism epitomized by America- particularly by American prosperity theology.

Being from the Bible Belt and raised Southern Baptist, I'm often reminded of the huge cultural impact that Christianity has. I'm not Christian myself, but admire the philosophy of Jesus.

Related etching, the introductory piece of the series.

Pixel Art / Pixel Portraits

Girlfriend on the left, I consider hers finished at the moment
Me on the right, still WIP

I plan to do several more of a few friends.

Ladyfriend ref:

Likeness note: her hair is now much shorter, as illustrated in the pixel art.

Me ref:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/phototekcub/loganreference.jpg
Likeness note:  My hair is now a bit longer.  Also, though I often have a rather apathetic facial expression, the dead-to-reality/hates-the-world expression is because I was high when the picture was taken.  I'm not always that creepy looking ; )

Also to note, Arachne provided me with an excellent edit over at pixeljoint, the initial portrait of the girl was much worse beforehand.

Comments/criticisms/suggestions/edits for either portrait are welcomed and appreciated.

General Discussion / Pixel Art Show
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:31:27 pm »
My art teacher has this idea planned for Sept 15, 2008. Deadline for submission is Sept. 30th, show will take place October 10th, thanks  We've got this gallery in the new building at our school, and it's has several large LCD screens.  The basic premise is to get display pixel art from different artists around the globe for a show.  Given, it's still a ways off, but as far as interest goes, sound like a marginally cool idea?

Information

The ASMS Gallery is hosting a Pixelart-specific show in its art gallery in September (finalized date to be announced, sorry for any confusion).  Which is where you come in.  Submit something, old or new, any subject matter, so long as the medium is pixel art.

We assumed that wasn't enough to sell you on the idea, so here's some incentive.
Though this is a show and not a competition, the entries will be judged and awarded accordingly.

Prizes are as follows:
1st Place- $100
2nd Place- $ 50
3rd Place- $ 25

There's no cost to enter, and you can submit old work- or use this as an excuse to make something new.  So there's little reason not to enter.

To enter, simply send the piece to my email at thereaintnocure@hotmail.com, or provide me a link in a private message here at the site.
It'd be very useful if you'd include your name, location (country/state), profession or student status, program used and any information you'd like to provide about the piece.

There is no limit on the number of entries, but prizes are restricted to one per person.

I haven't really sat down with a clear head to look at this yet, but I plan to finish it up soon.  Didn't quite finish in time for the pixeljoint challenge it was intended for, and it has too many colors anyway.  Comments and criticisms and suggestions and stuff welcome.

Anyway, Horatio, Sam, and the not yet pixelled Ernie are experiencing a collision of worlds.
Thought about expanding it so I could fit Chester the Cheetah or maybe Count Chocula in.

Pixel Art / Crux+scraps (now pixel dump thread)
« on: May 12, 2007, 07:55:48 am »
I'll get to that kraken in the future, I have no work ethic.  Blah.  Until then, anatomy help?

still really rough, just figured I'd see if anyone had some anatomy fixes before I took it further.

And random scraps:

1.  Low color, geometric lookin' experiment.

2.  Random spaceman made out of boredom.

3.  15x19 pieces, nothing special.

4.   Nervous salesman.  More boredom.

5.   Made for a chemistry presentation.

6.   Crabs using  alternate palettes.  And some pokemonesque creature pixelled after a friend drew a random shape during class and I transformed it.

7.   Greyscale piece made back when I was in graphic design.

8.   Face made with the mspaint default palette.

9.   Spongebob characters, might incorporate them in a scene later.

10. Mini-kraken made to be used as a secret emoticon on LoBD.

11. Face, continued boredom.
