General Discussion / Re: Post your oldest piece of pixel art.
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:59:48 pm »
Oldest thing I can remember making myself. Circa 2000.

I made a red version that had a different animation that I liked a lot better, but it's long dead.

Uh... I don't think that really counts as pixel art...

I mean, its got pixels, and its art, but not pixel art...

Um

I've seen stuff like this crop up every once in a while, but I just don't know how to explain it/tell the person the precise definition of "pixelart".

Pixel Art / Re: Broadway Poster

pixel art is for TV screens and computer monitors. use adobe illustrator/photoshop for posters and other printed media. it'd be great for a once upon a mattress RPG title screen though =P

I kinda agree with that...

If you want it pixelized, I think it needs to scream "pixels!"

Maybe try doing a super low-res 8-bit kinda thing...
This poster currently looks like it came from an old SNES Game, but I'm not really getting a pixel feel from it.

The play's a spin on the old story of "The Princess and the Pea", right? Maybe some mattresses stacked with a tiny green pea at the bottom? I think the play is supposed to be kind of a comedy, too. This looks a little too serious for a comedy.

Have you tried looking at other posters for the play? The all have a pretty similar motif: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=once+upon+a+mattress+poster

I'm not sure. I've never seen it. It's cool you're using pixels, though. Not sure if it's the best way to go, but interesting.

Also, is the plural for mattress mattresses or mattri?

Pixel Art / Mario & Luigi heads

Just made a sketch the other night and decided to pixel them...

I wanted to try my hand at self-AAing. Never tried it before.

EDIT: Just noticed I missed a few spots...

EDIT2: I need to slow down... I never notice the spots I miss until I post it!  :-[

When making a character, I like to give it a somewhat dynamic stance right away, rather than a stiff-limbed DaVinci pose. This really helps me to give the character the right shape and proportions.

Doesn't that get in the way of rigging a character, though?

It's been told time and time again. Name the reference, show us where it's from and include it in your thread and noone will care. Saying "this piece was based off a SSB screenshot" might call some frowns if you don't include the reference, as we can't judge the ammount of creativity. I've seen some badly pixelated crap here, that is considered top league because of the creativity involved. Creativity is everything...

I lost 'em when my drive crashed a while ago (along with a ton of my other crap), but I don't really count them anyway. I made a Waluigi and an Ice Climber sprite tracing screens from the Trophies. I dunno if anyone remembers them or not.
Although, I think it's the only thing I showed off when Pixelation was still around  :-[

Ah, cool.
I admit - I've traced a few of other people's works before when I was first learning to do pixel stuff (2 that I know of - they were both traced off of Smash Bros. Melee screenshots). However, now I just do all my own stuff ;D

General Discussion / Tracing?
« on: May 27, 2006, 06:43:14 pm »
Hey guys!

I'm just curious... how do you guys go about starting off your larger sprites (portraits, larger linearts, etc)?
I remember on the old pixelation tutorial that a lot of sprites are traced in Photoshop to get a rouch outline, then refined, colored, AA'd, etc. However, I keep getting this vibe that tracing is really looked down upon, almost "cheating" in the pixel community...

Am I just paranoid about this? Or is tracing an acceptable way to begin your sprites? Or is it only looked down upon if you trace from existing, unoriginal pictures (IE just tracing a wario head or something and calling it a new sprite)?

I switch between tracing and starting from scratch depending on the size or if I feel comfortable enough not to use a traced sketch.

I know it's all about the end result, but I kinda wanted your opinions on this since I've been wondering about it for a long time.

Thanks!
