"Light source" doesn't means "just fade the color to left to right", you have to suggest the shape of the object (for example, the block head: it's a block, right? From the shading you tells it's a falt piece of paper).
Quick edit:
Summing things up you definitley need more contrast, and you should try to use colored outlines, instead of black ones.

Yup, you should decide for a style and stick with that. Add outlines on the man, or removee them from the items (i'd suggest this one 
)

That's not a mockup, it's just a character sprite. Were you going for a style revamp? I don't remember the original link having googles.
However, it look extremely messy. You should start cleaning the outlines and setting a light source.

In my opinion you should remove the dithering, it kinds of ruins the composition. Nice choice of colors!
