Not to derail this really interesting discussion, I've got a question about something that's a major obstacle in almost every pixel I do: Large planes (especially flat ones). I almost invariably find myself adding meaningless texture or something to break it up, but that doesn't always work for what I'm trying to do.

How do the rest of you handle large surfaces? Just have the foresight to non include them?  :P

Thought I should probably come here for help rather than trying to stumble through it myself  :D

I need help primarily with the HUD, it's in no particular place or composition at this time. The beer bottle I'm currently thinking about being the equivalent of a health bar, the little 6-pack a health pack.


(Help with everything else is certainly still welcome :) )

The extra depth given by the darker brown is flattened by the green, because of the way you've just used it around the edges. The green (and brown) could be used to add wood grain texture, and the brown to AA between black and red.

I made an edit, not touching the branches ('cos I don't have time  :P ) but just showing you a way in which you could add some depth.
I also found that the twigs are quite thick without the green/blue taking it away ;)


In that last frame I just replaced the green with a default orange. I think it looks nicer :P

You've certainly improved but are concentrating overmuch on the lines. Try to block out colours, and look back to you reference frequently.

Here's an edit I made of the face/beard, note how I didn't even try to put the white of the eye in, details like that can be implied by variations in tone.


Now that I look at it, I can see that your face needs to be longer (horizontally) too.

I have a feeling that the reason it seems like the roundish pieces are more overwhelming is because the two triangular types use the two darkest colours. If that makes sense  :crazy:

Also, I assume that the empty black box'll contain the score? If so, maybe give a preview of the font 'n' stuff :)

Perhaps a bit overdone, my aa sure as hell isn't perfect but you can see that the aa needn't only hug the outlines, you can touch the white too :)
