Also keep in mind that the hips are generally the same width as the shoulders, if not bigger.

I think you did a nice job on the first hair style.  I see no problems there.
On the left I did a mouth edit.  Just seemed too wide and mis-shaped. On the right I went a bit more.  I know you weren't looking for a lot of detail, but I get carried away with pixels sometimes.  I found the head too wide and the neck a tad too long. And the shoulders had too much of a slope...just tried to balance things out and add more life.

I'm practicing drawing shapes an hour a day. I could invest more time but I don't want to become fed up with it so I'm starting slow and consistent and see where it'll take me.

That's perfect!

I never liked white outlines.
I tend to like higher contrast.  My edit reflects that.  I also think the shadow on the collar should more closely follow the shadow on the neck.
Also the mouth bothers me.  I do like what 32 did with it, but with out a reference, I can't offer any suggestions.
Overall, this looks great though.   :y:

Study the wolf a bit.  I used a bunch of references for this quick edit.  Pulled, tweaked, stretched, etc...and it's still not quite right.

Yours looked like it's leaning forward, interested in something with the hind leg stretched back like that, so I changed the position of some of the legs to reflect that in a more natural way??  Maybe?   ???

What do you mean a system? I don't understand.

It could be stick figures,  number of heads, shapes, etc.  The guy in the video had a system, which I think is pretty good at making things look right.
Even if you don't like anime, the proportions have to be correct or it won't look right.  The human anatomy is easy to make NOT look right.  Everyone sees it every day, so it's very familiar to people, and easy for people to see when something's not right. They might not know what's wrong.  Just that something is wrong. Drawing it from memory is quite hard without a system and or a lot of practice.  That's why to use a reference and practice.

I know this is anime, but the rules still apply for proportions:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6ZwuVq-0M4
This guy is pretty good and has helped me out.

And as 32 mentioned, find a reference.  << very important

A quick redraw using roughly the same heads height proportions results in an almost child-like form.  I even shrunk the head.

This is very good for a beginner.  Good contrast in your colors.  Some good pixel clusters vs. single pixels.  And the shading isn't too bad either.  It seems like you have some art background.
It seems this is a stylized piece with the thinness and such, but the anatomy is what stands out the most as with everyone else it seems.  To me, the head is too small, the shoulders are too narrow and the arms are too short.

I agree with everyone.  Fantastic improvement!

Just a few pixels can change a face a lot.  In my edit I lowered the eyes by one pixel and added a stronger shadow to the face,  and hair, added some contrast and a hand/arm edit.  There are many ways to make pixels as you can see in all the edits including yours.  Keep up the great work.
