Pixel Art / Re: Help me
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:24:10 am »
I used to feel the same way.  Sometimes I still do.
Art is a funny thing.  There are so many aspects to what makes art appealing, such as form, color, perspective, mood, dynamics, etc.  It goes on an on.  It's really a process of continuous learning.  I think every pixel artist struggles with at least one aspect of it.  And it's subjective.  What one persons loves, another might not like.   There are some real masters out there, but I'm sure they got there with hard work and perseverance.  This is what makes forums like this so valuable.  You quickly get an idea of what parts you should be working on.
You're certainly not a noob.  You best peice imo is:  http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/53592.htm#    It's a very appealing peice.  Color, mood, everything.  The peices you posted here aren't bad at all, but seem to be missing something.
I'm far from an expert, but the first one "Ascension~"  The light from the upper left isn't working as a light source.  And the wings should be a lot bigger to create a more dynamic pose.  And about the pose:  It's seems to have some sort of twist I don't understand.  I hope that helps.

@Kcilc - Wow!  Awesome edit.  The eyes are wonderful.  Just what I was looking for.  Nicely done.  I'm going to study that.
The hip edit looks good too.  Kind of extreme, but it works and looks natural.  Love it!

Thanks.

Well, I could always like it more.  I wouldn't know till I could do it.

About that texture feel.  I know what you mean.  I tend to over pixel things trying to make up for my lack of artistic ability.  I suppose I should work on getting the shapes right first.  I've heard the unrefined comment before.

At least the proportions didn't bother you.  I know they're not perfect, but I thought they looked ok.  I've learned to look at things at different times.  And every time I see something else a little off...like looking at it in a new frame of mind.

I just wish it came as naturally to me as some you guys make it seem.  Just practice I guess.

Thanks so much for the comments.  It means a lot from you.  I really like your work.

Yeah, the red and yellow eyes.  I picked those colors because of their value.  It's hard to do eye's right at this scale, so I mix colors till it 'looks right'.  Any suggestions?
One pixel really makes a difference in making her look like a raccoon or non-realistic.

And of "characteristic of all my work"...What overall is my stuff lacking?  In other words, what should I be focusing on?

Thanks again.

I posted this over at pj and got some comments on proportion, etc.  I wonder if you guys could enlighten me on some of the problems.  I'm trying to learn how to draw these type of things with limited references.  It's hard for me to see things sometimes.  Edits are encouraged.   :)
Also...maybe a general indication on how bad or good this is.  Thanks.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] New Tree gotten better!

The foliage looks like a top-down perspective which doesn't match the trunk. And another hue instead of pure black would look better.  The leaves are great though.

Way too much dithering imo.  And I didn't even know it was a girl until piffany mentioned little red riding hood.  I did a little edit.  Changed some colors, lost the dithering and adding some darker colors.  Edited the wolf too.   :hehe:

Also, your light source is inconsistent on the tree and the girl.  The tree looks like it's coming from the right and on the girls face, it was coming from the left.

Thanks for the eye edit.  It certainly stands out more as it looks larger now.  Maybe some repositioning might be in order.

EDIT:
I've been working on another one.  Tried to mess with the eyes a bit more.  The pointy corners of piffany's edit made it look too realistic.  I do like the edit though.
This one has more of a body so I'm sure there will be more comments on anatomy.   :P   Slightly more refined than the others.

I guess I'm looking for common areas of weakness on any of these.  I tend to make the same mistakes over an over and can't see them.

Pixel Art / [WIP]Anime Practice
« on: June 22, 2011, 06:03:00 pm »
Looking for some c&c on these.  I've been trying to draw/pixel anime for a while now.  This is my latest attempt.  They look ok to my eye but my other attempts did too until the next day.
I usually start with a basic head shape with some layout lines and tweak from there.  These are nowhere near finished, so the pixel level detail is not there.

Just looking for another set of eyes. Thanks.

You could go way further on this.  Not that my edit is that good, but it gives you an idea.

Do you have plans on making this walk or run?
