Pixel Art / Brother w/ Buster Sword
« on: November 11, 2014, 10:42:52 pm »
Started making this as a gift to my brother last year, but never finished it in time.  :(

Went to go work on it again this year, and it occurred to me that I should probably post about it as this kind of stuff is not my strong suit (anatomy, poses, full body portraits.. people in general), although I am very happy with how the face turned out, and it resembles him when he was younger.

The angle of his left arm holding the sword, and the way it rests/hovers on his shoulders might be problematic, I think, but not sure how to fix it.

Also, thinking about how to tackle his right hand and the texture on his coat and pants.. but I'll worry about that when I get to it I suppose.

In case you're wondering it's supposed to be him as Cloud Strife from FF7. To be honest though, I've really only used the sword so far.

I know it's quite large, sorry about that. I'll shrink it if it becomes a problem.

Some refs: My brother (recent). Younger: 1, 2, 3. Sword ref.

Pixel Art / Re: helicopter :D [WIP]NEED ALOT OF HELP ON THIS ONE
« on: March 17, 2013, 12:04:36 am »
If it's too big, can't you make it smaller? Or does it need to be this big for some reason? Are you using these for a game?

I'd also like to point out that the bottom 2 helicopter directions (up/down) are in an entirely different perspective than the first two. (left/right-facing) Instead of being seen at an angle, like the first two, showing both part of the side and the top; they're being seen completely from a bird's eye view. You'll realize these won't work together well in a game. I'm afraid this means you're going to have to do some redrawing depending on which perspective you actually want.

When you get to lighting & shading, you should think more carefully about where the light is coming from too. The random stripes you have right now are doing nothing to communicate the lighting.

It's cool.. but where are the black people!?

And I think a community build would be an interesting idea.

I like the bottom left one, but that's mainly because there is some variation in hue

The problem with reflective material (which a suit of shiny metal armor is highly) in sprites and tiles, is that they typically depend on their surrounding environment to create a believable reflection. Usually a strip of black that you see in the material, is actually a black object close to it.

Not really advice, I guess; but something to consider and a problem I sometimes have a hard time with myself.

About the reddish and greenish shades in St0ven's edit:

The reddish look comes from sub-surface scattering, which is basically light going through the skin and bouncing off the red blood cells, causing the skin to look more red. You can usually see this in midtones in skin.

The greenish I think is just reflected lighting, and also contrasts with the brown of the background/shadow of the skin.

This is the part I'm referring to:

And to be honest, the blueprint looks odd in the same way. The actual car doesn't look like that.

I can see how it might be required to connect the windshield to the front of the car. But the shading you've employed makes it look like a separate plane.

It seems like you're having trouble with the front of your cars. For the truck I would probably ditch the lighter part in the back and just shade it more solidly. It looks like pillow shading atm.

The blue car has an even worse problem with the front, though. Look at it again. It seems you have a mix of perspectives going on there; something between a full side view and a slightly skewed view, like you couldn't decide what to choose?
