This is exactly it. The hair is a lot better. And that mid tone (and the in between tone) makes a big difference.

I tried some stripes on his shirt but it didn't really come together. I'll have to get more comfortable with cloth first.

But otherwise I'm much happier with it. I could include the reference picture but I wasn't necessarily trying to copy it exactly. I think all the things addressed here are what I was feeling were missing. The nose looking a little more natural, the hair and the general shading of the face.

Thanks for the suggestions and example. It makes all the difference. And also thanks for the note about the use of gray.

This is a portrait I'm doing from a photo. I'm not sure why I'm not quite happy with it. The overshirt definitely needs more work but I've always struggled with cloth. And the hair doesn't stand out to me as being horrible, but I know it could be better.

Does anyone have suggestions what this is missing or where it could be improved?

Here's what I came up with. Thanks to the both of you for the suggestions. I'll have to come back to it but at least there is some depth now.

This looks great. After I see someone doing it right it seems so obvious but before then I just can't picture it. The eyes alone make a huge difference.

That is definitely an improvement. I'm not sure about the mid shading around her eye. But I'm happy with the darker shading now, and it seems like her main skin tone is what it needs to be to read as pale right?

I also cleaned up some of the angles and lowered the color count.

Here is a nervous pale beach girl. I think she lacks depth but I'm not sure why. Mostly happy with her clothes though. I usually struggle a lot more with cloth.

I tried to convey frazzled hair without going overboard.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or insight.

This looks great. The only thing I can say is that one "leaf" in the middle of the top half is getting a little washed out. I'd up the contrast either with brightness or color or both. Make the underside darker and the above side brighter and more yellow maybe The insides of the bottom half read really well.

Thanks for talking me through it. This is where I ended up. I still liked her small dreads, but I took your approach and gave them more structure.

And I toned down the highlights on her face a lot more. And gave her arm a little more form rather than just a straight line down.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried to hit all the points you made. Some worked out better than others. Obviously shading of the face is still the biggest problem. Maybe the two highlight colors have too much contrast? I tried lowering her mouth by one pixel but it looks weird. I did add some shading on the chin I'm happier with. I also played with her eyes a bit. I don't know that it's any better than before. I'll keep at it, but here is where it's at now.

Here's another character in a game I'm working on. Critiques? Her left cheek never quite looked right. And her forehead lighting also seems off but I can't place why.

I'm actually happy with her dreads but if someone has critiques I'd love to hear them. Hair is usually the biggest struggle for me but this came together pretty effortlessly.

Clothes also, but I ran out of ideas so I tried to play it safe here. I don't hate it but I don't love it.

Thanks for any advice anyone has!
